5 stars for their “hunebed” alone! The other 5 stars are more formalities, but it’s the hunebed that wins the internet today! My lord, what an amazing invention these things are! I say invention because when I hunted recipes, pickings were slim to none. Results were disappointing. Sad depressing photos of “hunebed brood bollen” coupled with what Drenthe is actually famous for: hunebed or “bed of the Huns”. These are peculiar man made rock formations not dissimilar to Stonehenge; and that’s precisely what the little baked treats are named after.
A delicate soft buttery cookie shell containing a caramel akin to Argentina’s Dulce de Leche with walnuts tender under all that gooey sweetness. They’re baked in classic Bundt style mini moulds and look absolutely delightful. GD these are good!
We were staying with a friend in Mantinge over 3 days. I polished off 4 ½ hunebed in that time. No shame.
Now that I’ve sampled the best thing they have on offer, I think I have it pretty clear on the recipe. Pretty much. But I’m not telling. And I hope they don’t either.

Bij het gevuld speculaas mag er wel meer speculaas hebben, en mijn god wat waren die sausijsenbroodjes slecht, volgens mij waren ze de kruiden vergeten, ze smaakten negens naar en proefde waterig alsof ik een ingevroren broodje had gegeten. Je haalt beter een fabrieks broodje bij de supermarkt dan bij deze bakker.
