We wanted to visit where I used to live on the Dutch border, and spent ages looking for a hotel. Eventually found this, and despite not normally booking this type of hotel, decided to give it a go.||Quick note - we booked originally via booking.com which allowed us the room only, but after contacting the hotel direct, we got an offer which included two meals in the stay - much better value and would definitely recommend it.||The hotel is actually a restaurant which has 5 rooms attached. Each room has a living area and bathroom on the ground floor and a bedroom on the first floor, accessible via a spiral staircase. We didn't use the living area, but the bedrooms are large, with comfortable beds. The staircase is a little bit difficult if you have accessibility problems but not a massive problem. It was a little bit loud some mornings and evenings given that the rooms adjoin the restaurant and the nearby castle. Breakfast was served in the restaurant, and really nice - basic continental but more than enough,||The restaurant is fab - really mean this, we had two meals - one 3 and one 5 course and both were fantastic, with some amazing touches - the passion fruit lolly pop dessert was one of the best things we have ever eaten!! We ate outside with views overlooking the river which was a great setting - there was a good wine list, but the normal house wine was lovely and reasonably priced. It is closed on a Monday, but we would have eaten there again if it hadn't have been.||Staff are really friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome a both from a hotel and restaurant point of view, and helped out a lot via email when booking.||Kessel itself is a really quiet and lovely place to walk around and some lovely restaurants if you don't fancy the hotel. The views from the hotel over the river and the walks along it are amazing.||This place is well worth the visit and I would definitely...

Read moreWe booked this Hostellerie, located in the grounds of a derelict castle besde the river Maas, because of its proximity to the Floriade. On arrival we found we could not easily access the car park because the Hostellerie was surrounded by a street fair (fair ground rides). We originally booked for a two night stay but after making enquiries from the staff we found out the the fair started the following day and went on till at least 2 am. We then decided to only syat for one night and make other arrangements for the second night.||The rooms have a strange layout. There is a small sitting area, with uncomfortable wicker furniture, and a bathroom downstairs and a basic bedroom upstairs joined by a narrow spiral staircase. Fortunately my wife and I are able bodied, but someone people who are either elderly or infirmed would struggle in these rooms.||We did not eat in the restaurant as it seemed quite expensive, but there is a very good...
