Dorpszicht — Restaurant in Schagen

"Cozy" place with mediocre food and grumpy service. We didn't have a reservation, so we got squeezed into the worst table, even though many tables were open at the time of our arrival. We didn't argue because the host/waitress was not very welcoming at all and did not appear to want to listen to anything we have to say anyway. We ordered Coke Zero and received Pepsi Max, €3.50 for 0.2 L ... that's steep. I ordered the Holsteiner Schnitzel and it says on the menu that it comes with unlimited salad and potatoes. My mom and my sister each ordered the Schweinelende with Brie Cheese, which also came with unlimited salad and potatoes. When my Schnitzel arrived, the grumpy waitress put down a small bowl of potatoes and a small salad which I thought was mine until my mom's and my sister's food arrived without any sides. The grumpy waitress then announced that we should share the tiny salad and the potatoes and then order more if we want more, then she walked away. We were kind of dumbfounded and started splitting up the tiny salad and the overdone potatoes. It took quite some time to get the server's attention again to order more potatoes and salad and then it took another quite some time to get another tiny salad and another order of way overdone potatoes. We were almost done with our meals by the time the unlimited side dishes arrived. What a joke.

My Schnitzel was not bad, but it tasted like it was deep fried and not pan fried. The dish itself lacked some serious "moisture", I'd definitely recommend ordering a side of gravy with it, because the gravy was the best part of the other dish at the table, the pork tenderloin with brie cheese. The tenderloin was dry and did not work well with the bed of mixed veggies underneath. The gravy was good though.

€81.50 later (1 Schnitzel, 2 pork tenderloin, 1 mineral water and 2 Pepsi Max), we all had the same opinion, "we definitely do not have to...

We had mixed feelings about our dining experience. Unfortunately, the steak we ordered was undercooked, and the salad lacked flavor, while some potatoes were overly salted. Additionally, there was no menu for drinks, so we had to guess what was available, and the drinks we did order were quite small. Despite paying around 65 euros for two meals, two drinks, and a small appetizer, we ended up leaving much of the food uneaten due to our disappointment with the taste.

However, I must commend the service. Our waitress was incredibly kind and attentive, which made us feel very welcome. The ambiance inside the restaurant is lovely, with thoughtful and attractive decor. The outdoor seating was decent, though the large umbrellas did cause some noise...

Vandaag gezellig gedineerd met mijn ouders. Bij binnenkomst werden we vlot geholpen door een vriendelijke jongedame. We hadden een tafel gereserveerd in de serre, maar besloten toch liever buiten te zitten vanwege de warmte en het geluid. Dit was geen enkel probleem: we kregen een mooi plekje vooraan in de zon. Top!

Ik wilde graag een wijntje en koos uiteindelijk voor een rosé. De serveerster wist echter niet of het om een droge of zoete rosé ging. Ze zou dit navragen, maar even later kregen we onze drankjes — inclusief een fles rosé — zonder enige terugkoppeling. Er werd blijkbaar aangenomen dat ik een droge rosé wilde.

Het concept waarbij je per glas zelf wijn kunt schenken vanuit een fles vind ik erg leuk. Wel vraag ik me af of er echt vijf volle glazen uit een fles te halen zijn, zoals vermeld. Mijn ervaring is dat dit meestal net niet lukt.

De garnalen piri piri waren helaas teleurstellend: verwacht je een pittige smaak, dan is het jammer als het gerecht flauw blijkt. De knoflookchampignons en tomatensoep daarentegen waren erg smakelijk!

Mijn hoofdgerecht was een schnitzel met champignonroomsaus. De saus werd koud geserveerd, maar na mijn opmerking hierover werd dit direct opgepakt: excuses aangeboden en snel een warme saus gebracht. Heel netjes opgelost! Wel viel op dat de bijgerechten die standaard bij het hoofdgerecht horen, ontbraken — niet alleen bij ons, maar ook bij twee andere tafels naast ons. Als we hier niet zelf om gevraagd hadden, waren ze waarschijnlijk niet gebracht. Best opvallend, zeker omdat het wél op de menukaart staat.

De nacho’s met gehakt waren óf te lang gebakken óf hadden te lang onder een warmtelamp gestaan: de kaas was bijna verbrand. We hebben dit gemeld bij de bediening, die aangaf het door te geven aan de keuken. Helaas hebben we hier verder geen terugkoppeling over gekregen en is er niets gecompenseerd. Dit vond ik jammer; bij een minder geslaagde ervaring verwacht je toch iets van service of op z’n minst een reactie. Dit wekt de indruk dat de bediening nog onervaren is en dat er op het gebied van gastvrijheid nog winst te behalen valt.

Al met al een gezellige avond, maar er is zeker nog ruimte voor...
