Grand Café Esplanade — Restaurant in Tilburg

A perfect example for the lack of competition in the university of tilburg, which as far as I understand, is not a coincidence, but a sort of 'deal' between the uni and the business owner. To be fair, sometimes the service and food are good out of pure luck (I like those students part-time waiters/waitress. They are usually sweet). But in most cases, the food is overpriced, and the service is...embarrassing. I was even told once that we were supposed to PAY FOR THE FOOD THAT WAS SENT BACK TO THE KITCHEN. This was literally the first time in my whole life with dining experience in almost every continent in the world that I heard such thing and to make the case worse--in the most condescending tone one can imagine. Well, all I can say is, I understand that this restaurant is going to be in TiU probably as long as the university is, because, as mentioned in the beginning, it's the ONLY restaurant on campus. But luckily, the university has a very small campus and close to the city center. So I probably will NEVER go back again. Even if you are not as easily offended as me and feel perfectly okay to pay for the food that was not even sit on your table, you still can easily find something better elsewhere. I rarely make reviews but this can’t go unnoticed for me, as I felt extremely unwelcome.

I’ve worked in service for years myself so I always make efforts to be nice to staff. I would also say, being Danish, my expectations to service is very modest. But I legit just left this place after I waited for half an hour for someone to take my order, and eventually I just left after three attempts. The restaurant was not buzzing at all, staff wasn’t busy. Normally, I think staff here is really nice. But the waitress (blonde) would avoid me, while taking other people’s orders. Several times, she would just stare me dead in the eyes and pass by me, when I would smile nicely and try to gesticulate. Came here on Friday afternoon with a bunch of friends and my professors to celebrate the end of our course. I ordered a Hertog Jan (draft) which arrived at almost room temperature and flat. The beer tasted extremely stale, like it’s been poured and left in the room for 20 minutes already. Multiple people from the table tried it and they all agreed. When I brought this up to the waitress she said she’s gonna “ask”, then came back 10 minutes later and when I asked her about it again she said that no one else complained.
