PhatHouse Brewing Co. — Restaurant in Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community

Arrived here for our first visit and my husband ordered a pint of beer and a traditional margarita for me - we expressly said no ice ! When margarita arrived there were about 6 cubes of ice in the margarita. I said to the female red headed bar member of staff (who we spoke to when ordering) that I didn’t want ice. She just took the drink away without any apology and with attitude! - when she returned with the drink I thanked her and she didn’t even acknowledge me just turned her back and walked off. Absolutely attrocious attitude towards a customer. I approached the bar when we were leaving and asked who was in charge. With somewhat undecided looks the guy at the bar said I suppose Caroline is. I explained what had happened to Caroline who seemed rather surprised to hear my feedback. I said that rather than just head to Google reviews felt it was only fair to say something to management in person first! However despite Caroline saying they appreciated the feedback I really felt that it had landed on deaf ears. We certainly would not go there again. I love the sample tasting plates. It gives you an opportunity to try a few different beers, ales, lagers, and ciders.

Unfortunately my experience was marred.

I asked the lady how long the food takes to order, because I want to have my cold beer and food together. She said I could order the food first. Great. Then I ordered the beer. When she pulled the first beer I asked again how long the food will take, because I don't want warm beer. She said she will put it through to the kitchen and continued pulling the other 3 beers. It was ice cold and looked delicious.

Then I had to wait for my food. After about 10 minutes my beer was warm and I was very upset. I specifically said I wanted the beer and food together. I specifically said I want to order the food first. When she pulled the first beer I specifically asked how long the food will take, because I wanted cold beer.

I asked her after the wait how long the food will still take, because my beer was getting warm. Then she said oh, you wanted it together? What did she not understand the 4 times I said it before?

When the food came, my beer was gross and warm. The smaller glasses get warmer much quicker, and it was a very hot day. It ruined the entire experience.

We stumbled across a small sign, advertising this place and it was around 2pm. We thought we’d pop in and see if their kitchen was still open ( forgetting that in NZ if you serve alcohol you have to have food available as well- love it). So their kitchen was open, we were starving… the food was fantastic!! We ordered the McPhatty burger and chips for our son ( notoriously fussy when it comes to burgers), pepperoni pizza, the pork belly and haloumi and filo share plates. Seriously… the food was awesome! It was an added bonus that the beer was just as good. At the time they were having a spirit and cocktail festival.... so we also discovered some amazing gins from NZ. They also had a fasntastic DJ for the afternoon as well. Honestly, this place is a hidden gem. The beers they brew here were the best from our whole trip. We wished we had purchased a few more to take with us, as this was at the beginning of our 2 week trip of the North Island. We also grabbed a t-shirt, great merchandise for us to buy...
