I’ve visited Sunset Point several times, usually stopping by during my trips to Mahia throughout the year. While the food and service have been consistently mediocre, the atmosphere has typically been upbeat and lively.
On my recent visit, I arrived around 8 PM with my niece, hoping for a relaxed evening with drinks, a game of pool, some finger food, and perhaps the pokies. Unfortunately, the experience fell short. Service was reasonable, though we waited a bit to be served. The drink options didn’t quite appeal to me, and the overall atmosphere was disappointing—staff seemed tired, yawning, and there was no music to set the mood. The TAB was turned off early, and the pokies were closed soon after with a last-call announcement.

"Would highly recommend. Amazing views of the Mahia Peninsula from the deck. The cabin was equipped with everything you could need and the décor was outstanding. Dean and Lorna were very friendly and welcoming and provided a wealth of information. Fantastic accommodation for two people."
However the Sunset Point Bar/Restaurant in Mahia is an excellent place for drinks and dinner, but the above review does not refer to their establishment.

Read moreStopped here on our way from Gisborne to Nukutaurua road to get some fish and chips. The ladies were lovely and helpful but unfortunately the fish we got were absolutely horrible. It tasted almost like it was off, had some discoloration like a yellowy greenish tint, not white thats for sure. The better was so oily it didn't go down at all. Had to chuck them away which sucked because we were so hungry. Chips were average, soggy but the all sauces made up for it.
