While the staff were really friendly and helpful, the food was a real let down. The Kiwi Steak was mostly seared nicely but was well underseasoned and cooked unevenly, with onion rings that were nicely cooked on the outside but somehow had mystery liquid (im assuming water and oil) pool out once you bit into them, a tiny sad salad, and chips cooked in very dirty oil to the point where they tasted burnt although they were golden. The nachos had some of the stalest chips I have ever eaten and no doubt were very very old, though the meat had nice flavour. My partner had the pub beef schnitzel and as an avid snitty fan was so disappointed that he suggested heading straight out for wicked wings to cheer himself up. His meal also had a very small sad salad and while the snitty had a nice looking crumb he reckons it tasted like it was fried in dirty oil and that the meat almost tasted off. My brother had the vegetable stack which seems to be the winner of the night as he enjoyed it though did think it was underseasoned. The kumara fries (not wedges as listed in the menu) were also reasonably nice. While the restaurant itself is a nice environment and very kid friendly with a lovely team, overall for the price (we paid a bit over $200 for the three of us including 2 cocktails and 2 beers!) you would expect a bit more care to be taken with the food and not to be served incredibly stale...

Looking forward to evening dinner in the garden bar on a beautiful Invercargill evening. Unfortunately the experience was just average. Ushered to our table, given a jug of water and no glasses. Then drinks order taken and only 1 drink delivered and after 25 minutes had to ask for other. Entrées arrived and not cutlery. Had to get our own cutlery, napkins and salt and pepper from elsewhere. Ordered Seafood Chodwer and only luke warm and had a skin on the top. Mains were delivered and 2nd round of drinks ordered. Were half thru meals and had to go to bar to get own drinks. At least mains were to satisfaction. On leaving apologies from staff and discounts on bill. Not up to usual standard I expect from The Cabbage Tree Restaurant. Staff were courteous and friendly. Large crowd in adjacent Hall so could have extended staff limits???? Date of visit:...

Won't even give them a one star if it was down to me, but google won't accept my review unless I do. Booked to find out on arrival that they couldn't provide a meal due to a power outage. Could have rung & saved the trip. Staffed looked confused & unsure what to do and unapologetic. Was told The Manager would be following up.....instead the follow up was to cancel our booking an hour later. No follow up call & when I rung how disappointed I was in the service we received, it was very unapologetic. Would be a long time before I return to this establishment due to the rudeness of the staff. Shame as the place can be a goldmine if it's run right. And looking at your reviews...well it's happened before. Poor service & they don't...

Amazing dining experience by far. The food we order exceeded our expectations. We love. All of the food on the table and with the price we paid it's all worth it. Having outdoor play area for an active toddler like our son is a plus for a fine dining like the cabbage tree. It gives the family time to go out and dine in a fancy restaurant without worrying of having kids with them. Our boy enjoyed the art material that was give to him too so it's another plus👍Great place, and customer service ⭐

Unfortunately our experience was not what we have had to many previous visits to this establishment. We learnt and heard from many people that there have been problems with the quality and services and it's a shame as the long established reputation of this restaurant was that it was an excellent choice to enjoy a that it offered. It will require a lot of improvement and consistency to secure a future booking from us but I do wish them the best to achieve this in the future.

Seafood Chowder tasty, opted for the main size and couldn't finish it!! Huge bowl, lots of mussels, calamari and shrimp (less fish than usual). Soup was thick and creamy. Staff are always helpful and attentive. Steak was tender and cooked to order with chips salad and a delightful peppercorn sauce. Steaks $40 plus, but plenty of items in whats called the tavern menu (pasta, nachos, snitzel $25 to $35). Extremely good outdoor area, excellent for summer days.
