The Boat Shed cafe is perhaps the most photographed building in Rawene, with its rustic shell having sat in place for more than 50 years. Inside, though, the building's rough exterior gives way to a charming interior, filled with love for the Hokianga. Though the cafe has changed ownership over the past 20 years, the local's menu favorites have remained unchanged with the boatshed bene and leak and muscle pie becoming iconic. As many ingredients as possible are sourced locally, with the eggs coming from Rawene local, Edith, free-range flock. Even the herbs are sourced locally, in fact from pots sitting on the cafe's verandah! The eventual aim is to source all produce locally, but everything they use currently doesn't disappoint. This world-class cafe is well worth the small detour to get there. A great spot for the whole family.

I can't say we'll be back anytime soon but definitely coming back when we get the chance! Food, service and atmosphere are on point. I love the pastries. Bought heaps to bring back to Hamilton. Haven't had the chance to try their lunch menu but their breakfast ones are superb. Managed to convince the fam to have brunch here while visiting Paihia and it did not disappoint them. The kids love the croissanr and brownies. Oh and the adults as well. Love the creamy mushroom too! Love everything. Would love to come back 💚

My husband and I stopped in at the boatshed Cafe to get takeaway coffee whilst waiting for the ferry. After waiting for more than 10 minutes for them to sort out their eftpos facilities for another customer we ordered. The two guys behind the counter talked nonstop with each other taking their sweet time making the coffee, everything was ready, shot was poured, milk was hot but instead of finishing the job they stood talking with each other. I asked if they could please finish the coffee as the barge was docking and was told, "don't worry the barge won't leave for 15 mins" I explained that the barge was shuttling and was told that "I could catch the next one then". So rude! My husband had gone back to our car in line to drive onto the barge but because we were not back he had to let other cars drive in front of him...we missed the barge and waited 40 minutes for the next one. Will not recommend the boatshed to anyone. You guys have really slipped, I have accomidation and host guests. Will be sharing our experience...

After exploring Rawene for a few hours, my family went to the café for lunch. The staff were friendly as soon as we entered, and the place has a charming and warm ambience. The other patrons were friendly as well and it felt welcoming considering we were from out-of-town. We ordered and had our lunch on our table within a reasonable timeframe (felt longer as our toddler was getting hungry) and we enjoyed taking in the relaxing surrounds - the cafe interior and watching the ferries go past on the sea outside. Overall the food was reasonably priced and was outstanding in terms of taste - better than a lot of Auckland cafés. I had the mussel pie and I easily rated it a 10/10. My wife had a salmon bowl, which she really enjoyed but felt the price might have been marginally expensive compared with my dish. My son had the pizza, which he devoured. We also order a few smoothies and coffee. We’re pretty picky but we were impressed at every turn....

All though I had eaten here some 6 months or so ago and throughly enjoyed the experience today was something a little bit different. My wife and I decided to do a bit of a road trip. After crossing over on the car ferry to Rawene we thought we would go and have something to eat. So to the Boat shed we headed after arriving I said to the lady are you closing for which she replied yes. I said bugger we were just going to have something to eat. Any ways we went down the street came back here was the young lady with a bag . She said look I’m terribly sorry but here’s a couple of muffins to help you on your way. And she apologised for not being open. Theses good folk in this cafe are absolutely up there with the best in the hospitality sector . My wife and I were very grateful for your gift and you will see us again . Gary &...
