We found this place on Google and it looked promising so we made our way out there to give it a go. It did not disappoint. Great service, great food, huge friendly black cat (Ron), nice outdoor area, it was all winning!!

Smashed avo with bacon - actually the best I have had and the bacon was cooked with the perfect crisp! Chili eggs/Shakshuka - divine! Followed up with Hot Chocolate cake and wow! Probably the BEST chocolate cake we have had.

It was so good we actually changed our plans the next day to ensure we could go again for breakfast! This time I had the savoury mince dish and wow again! I haven't had a mince dish this good anywhere - perfectly cooked, not greasy or oily and the flavour was perfect! Unfortunately they no longer had the cake so despite being sad we couldn't eat that again, we have the memory haha.

If you're headed anywhere near this place, it's only a few minutes off the main highway towards Hot Water Beach, go get some delicious food, great coffee, and pet the beautiful...

ROLLING HOT WAVES

My husband and I visited Hot Waves Cafe at Hot Water Beach, Coromandel Peninsula New Zealand.

As my husband was raised at Hot Water Beach during his childhood, revisiting is very memorable for us. I last visited here in 2017 and unfortunately Hot Waves Cafe closed down due to COVID. Since then, we have new owners which I have the opportunity to speak to.

My observations are as follows:

Very quiet m, private and secluded, like a very short 20 meter bush track walk thriough by which to enter.

The real fruit ice cream is the best and recommend the mixed berry.

I have a cup of flat white which is fabulous.

When speaking to the owner went by the name of Jed, I found him to be very hospitable and friendly towards customers.

The outing settings are none less than an artistic design which I found was improved since 2017.

ADVICE: highly recommended, especially for chilling out at breakfast and lunch, not to mention their wonderful...

Over an hour waiting for lunch... Sure, it was a bit busy but it was ridiculous. Tables all around were in the same situation, and other reviews seem to indicate similar experiences. The food was good (although pouring balsamic vinegar all over the bottom of the burger made it sticky and soggy to hold - maybe don't do that), and the outdoor setting is beautiful. The kids enjoyed the play area too, but it wasn't enough to hold them for the extremely long wait, so they were fussing and whinging by the time our food arrived. We were disappointed the staff gave no indication of a lengthy wait when we ordered, nor were we provided any updates along the way. I actually had to go to the counter to ask, where I found people from neighboring tables doing the same thing. Food: B- Setting:...

ORIGINAL REVIEW (1*): We went here on Wednesday, 28th December 2022. It used to be a favourite of ours, consistently good coffee, but I think it's changed hands. Our coffee was too bitter to drink, so we took it back to the counter and told them that. They let us walk out without offering to refund our $10, and without offering to make us a new one. That's the last time I'll be going there. UPDATED REVIEW (4*): It has been a year, so we decided to try again after all (Dec-23), as we'd seen good reviews since then. Definitely back to making good coffee again, thank goodness, so we updated our review to 4*. Lovely garden setting and good atmosphere. We took a mark off as they'd never responsed to our earlier review.

Update on the wonderful Hot Waves Café. Open every day with an original inspired menu that is well worth trying. The café and beautiful grounds have undergone a transformation and update and remain one of our favourites on the Coromandel. Hidden away back behind Hot Water Beach is the perfect café that the locals would love to keep secret. There is now craft beer on tap and great local wine options. Really, what more can you want? Well worth dropping in for breakfast, lunch, or just to relax and have a quiet brew. It's well worth the effort, check out the art on displayed around the café, very highly recommended.
