Andersons Bay Thai — Restaurant in Otago

We went here due to the 4.7 rating that it had, but what we experienced was so far short of deserving that rating, that I suspect some of the reviews here are false. You may notice some of the reviews are gushing about how incredible it is, but you will notice that the photos of the food and the décor of the restaurant don’t really fit those descriptions.

We eat out at Thai restaurants a lot (and are always trying new places) and sadly the quality of the food and the atmosphere in this place was at the very bottom of the scale.

On the plus side: The service was very friendly and fast (though we were the only ones in the restaurant). The woman who served us was nice and very polite.

However: We didn’t realise that it was not licensed so we couldn’t buy alcohol (though to be fair this was entirely our own fault for just assuming that they would be) Fried chicken wings were dry and with a dry powdery coating on them Chicken satay (“Chicken Stay” on the menu) was also very dry Fish cake was rubbery Pad See Ew (pork) tasted nice however some of the pork was very fatty/chewy Thai Pork Salad had lots of white onion in it that overpowered everything else and not much meat Peanut sauce was gluggy Main dishes came out on plastic plates!

Sadly, not a single item on the menu that we had was of the quality of what we would consider an average Thai restaurant could do, so we do not recommend this place and cannot understand how it got such a...

I came here because it had a high star rating on Google, I have had Thai many times but wanted to try something different. I asked the staff member a few questions and I decided to go for the chicken green curry. I didn't have to wait to long and he came out with it all bagged up for me and said there was complimentary veg spring rolls in there for me. I thought that was really lovely, maybe they thought giving me something extra would be good like "oh if she doesn't like the curry hopefully she'll not give a bad review". I'm always honest with my reviews and usually give good ones. I only ever give a negative if it's been a really bad experience. Anyway I'd recommend this place, staff was friendly, food was delicious and you might even get a freebie. The atmosphere could use a little work, even just music...

Service was good and food came out pretty fast. I love how there were plenty of vegetables with the fried noodles, plus the salads! They gave some fried dumplings as entree too. However, all the dishes were WAY too sweet, even for us who love a bit of sweetness in our homemade food. For the price, the portion size was very sad. The rice that came with the curry was so little that we couldn't even finish the curry, especially because the curry was sickenly sweet. Come only if you have discounts, otherwise the food is way too overpriced...
