This almost "a hole in the wallc style of place was previously named Lockies and was justly famous everywhere for its fish and chips.

Now Lockie himself is involved with the Fishwife takeaways on Moeraki waterfront. The baton for the old place has changed hands.

But fear not. The new owners here at Hampden Takeways formerly known as Lockies continue the tradition and the takeaway offerings from here are as good as ever.

And still worth a special trip to visit or stopping in while passing. With the side benefit that Hampden Beach is a but short drive away so you can get a proper feed of fish and chips and then enjoy them whole still piping hot, at a proper sandy beach setting, replete with the seagulls...

Extremely impressed at the fast, efficient and friendly service. It was very busy being Easter Monday and we expected a long wait but to our surprise they were sending the orders out as quick as they were receiving them. So well done guys 😁 And the fish and chips were delicious!!! We got 2 elephant fish and ½ scoop of chips for under $15!!! Now that is excellent!!! The chips were all perfect with no blemishes or discoloration and we're a nice size. Overall I would highly recommend stopping off for a feed. It's on the main highway so not out of your way, affordable with plenty of parking available. The beach just down the side road is a great place to eat your fish...

A small but very inviting store! The order took a while to come out but there was also a long line that day. The Blue Cod was very delicious, light and flaky, juicy too! All the fishes were not overly salty, which helped showcase the clean taste of the fish. The Tarahiki was firmer than the cod, but no less juicy and delicious. The Whitebait was served in a thin egg batter, which imparted a strong egg flavour that competed with the flavour of the fish more than it complemented it I feel. The Elephant Fish Burger was excellent, with the redbeet pickles providing a good crunch and sourness. Overall, this place is a must stop if you are driving up...

It's well worth stopping and having a feed of fish and chips here as you will not be disappointed. Yes it is not cheap but what you get is value for money. The fish is super fresh, large fillets and cooked well. I also had a paua patty that was made of chunks of paua which is hard to find and it was delicious. So if you are passing please stop and give them a try as I'm sure you will not be disappointed as I will not only recommend to you all but to family and friends as well.
