The Church Cellar Door and Cafe — Restaurant in South Island

Set amongst the picturesque Gibbston Valley, we stumbled across this winery as a recommendation from a well informed local winemaker… we were not disappointed.

With the rolling green mountains on either side, fun outdoor games, a cricket pitch and an incredible indoor setup, this tactfully decorated space is unique and by far one of the highlights of our trip to Queenstown and the surrounding region.

Boasts an exceptional range of local wines, local craft beers and a gourmet range of snacks, we were delighted to have discovered this gem and became a special place for my partner and I on our vacation.

Ordered: Chicken Wings with Hot & Spicy sauce

The wings were tasty and delicious, the only letdown is the sauce. It smells peppery and a little spicy, but the taste does not reflect that. It's more like a little sweet and mild hot

It's a little confusing with the number of wings there should be, as we received five pieces, but receipt has a "8" next to the Chicken Wings line

Coffees are good The taste of caffeine is definitely there, much better than a lot of cafe coffees we've tried

Service was great We came in when a few tour groups arrived around the same time, and they even apologised for the delay in servicing us. Very polite...

As brave walk-ins, we went to this place without any reservations and fortunately, The Church Cellar Door and Cafe is open until 6pm, which is a big 👍.

We ordered the charcuterie board and the double cream brie with chutney was a standout especially when paired with a good local wine. I also ordered the tomato and basil soup and it was like a warm hug - simple yet rich and flavourful. One of the best tasting tomato soup I’ve ever had, IMHO.

The icing on top is Sherry and her utmost hospitality. She didn’t forget to add her brand of service by engaging with us. We felt genuinely welcomed and accommodated.
