I've been to the Woodstock 4 times in the last six months and have had two good and two bad meals.
Ribeye was lovely. Cheesecake excellent. Pork ribs were very generous. Sticky date pudding very comforting.
Wild special pork medallions were the toughest pork I have eaten, it made a tearing noise when cutting with my knife: the driest meat I have ever been served. Pity as the flavour was nice. I talked to the male owner about it but he brushed it off, implied I was mistaken which was pretty frustrating. Do the chefs ever taste the food they serve, or just send it out blindly? I did notice one of the waiters plating meat directly from a bigbig rotisserie/steam cooker so probably no tasting happening for that food...
Pork belly tonight was still tough and a lot better than the medallions, but the crackling was extremely chewy. When I gave feedback to the male owner he claimed not to know anything about how it was cooked. The lady owner was more helpful and told me that there would still be crunchy crackling on the roll, and that it could be found by tapping it. Why didn't they find some of the crunchy stuff when preparing my meal? Our table also had two burger orders messed up, on a quiet night. Terrible live saxophone music drove us out so we didn't order desserts.
Overall good desserts but hit and miss meat and service. Pizza menu names unappetizing (Swampy Paddock I am looking at you!). Nice family-run pub but dissapointing quality control makes me nervous about returning. I think that a smaller menu and better execution of dishes, with basic things like tasting it before serving it - would...
Read moreWe booked at short notice while wandering around Hokitika, and were a little startled when we arrived to find the units were in a pub carpark - and there was no signage - it has been ordered. However, when we checked in, t was to find lovely modern units with plenty of space and everything we needed. Price was excellent and even included unlimited wifi and Netflix. The only thing missing was a couch or some form of more comfortable seating. Still, we had a very pleasant stay, with great advice on places to visit. We had supper at the pub twice and were well fed and watered. The pub has its own microbrewery as well as the standard offerings, and there was live music on Friday evening.||Despite the positioning there was no noise from the pub or the road, there was ample hot water and a very comfy bed. Ideal for a stopover, it is about 6kms outside Hoitika. We would definitely stay again. Only caution would be to park the car at the end of the units rather than in front - some of the pub patrons seemed to think they were on a race track as they came in and left. There is...
