The most-reviewed restaurant in Abeokuta for a reason, or several, should I say? First of all, the food: some of the finest beans we two Englishmen have ever tasted, and we should know: we are committee bean counters. We only came to Abeokuta to look at the cathedral, but left with an even more celestial prize in the form of sweet flavours of Togolese culinary goodness on our lips. Which brings us on to our second reason: our host, the inimitably friendly and welcoming Charles, who has done such service to the good people of southwest Nigeria in bringing the beans recipe of his Togolese mother to Abeokuta. What a charming fellow. She should be very proud of him. He told us that it has taken him three years to build up such a strong online presence, and it is nothing but a pleasure and an honour to contribute to his growing cultural impact. Reason number three: the environment. Comfortable seating, cosy and intimate yet with a fine open facade that allows diners to gaze at the passing okadas with bellies full and looks of warm satisfaction. We loved the ambient music too. Reason four: proximity to St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral Igbore, and therefore a perfect spot for hungry worshippers spilling out of the eves, or on their way to them. Fifth and finally, we cannot forget the price: 1,500 Ngn for two portions of beans, palm oil and plantain with a loaf of agege bread each and two Fantas. Whoever Charles’ accountant is, he is some bean counter.

One of the best. You will ask for more. He needs support for his business to grow.
