Stunning scenery and location, a beautiful quaint hotel that exceeds your expectations in Matka Canyon, Macedonia.
Canyon Matka Hotel is very cosy, located in the heart of the gorge, you feel instantly at peace, surrounded by the lake and nature.
The rooms are very clean, and be sure to book one facing the lake to enjoy the magic views of the canyon. A nice surprise was you receive a free bottle of wine for your stay.
The restaurant and bar are full of views and all tables have the same magical views, you truly feel you are in a private oasis, it was very tranquil.
The food was exceptional, we really enjoyed the crisp fresh salads and the meat and fish dishes were mouthwatering. After four days we dined a few times and were equally impressed with every dish. The menu was extensive and desserts were also a treat, portion sizes were plentiful.
We enjoyed a few cocktails on the terrace, soaking up the views and they were made to perfection. It was also a busy spot for day-trippers, following their experiences in the canyon.
A big thank you to Dejan for his high level of service, he was very attentive and warm. Most staff have been with the hotel for long durations, and make you feel very welcome, they exude energy and friendliness. Alexander is the manager and was an absolute delight to spend time with too.
if you are an early riser it's worth noting breakfast starts at 9 am. They have a range of choices, the bacon, and eggs baked with cheese were delicious, fresh juices available and coffee was excellent.
A boat trip with Almata Prima Kayak Rental And Boat Tours, located next to the hotel, through the canyon is well worth doing, it was magical. You also visit a cave, only one hour for the trip, and very affordable on a luxury pontoon at 750 denar each.
Another fun activity is to kayak through the canyon, ideally during the morning if you want to avoid the tourists, it is a very popular place to visit. If you are a fan of hiking, there is no shortage of treks.
A fellow guest we became friends with from the US, has stayed in this gorgeous hotel for five weeks, a true testament to the hotel and friendly staff.
The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from the car park via a cobblestoned trail, but the hotel will ensure your luggage is transported, we loved the simplicity and the experience.
To have the canyon a short 25 minutes from Skopje, the capital city of Macedonia is a true treasure, recommend staying for a few nights to truly enjoy the...
Read moreI don't give many poor reviews, but the service here was unusually poor.
Let me start by saying, the hotel is in a beautiful location: lovely boat trip through the canyon, kayak rentals, swimming (albeit cold, but fun to jump off the rocks), and gorgeous views.
We spent one night and rented two rooms for a fairly reasonable rate given that it's the only hotel in the canyon (although quite high procest for Macedonia). We were told that we could not drink the water, but then when we asked where we could get some, the only option was to buy small bottles costing over 1 euro each from the restaurant. Not only do we hate the idea of all the plastic waste, the restaurant staff were quite rude and inflexible. Each room came with a free bottle of wine, but we don't drink wine so we suggested they simply give us some (much cheaper) water instead: no deal. No flexibility at all. We hoped to sit down and play some games in the evening and wanted to sit at one of the tables in the restaurant and order some drinks (where there were at least 8 open tables after the dinner hour) and they insisted that we sit in the more crowded "cafe and bar" area with small tables and barstools. We walked down the trail and we're able to find an old picnic table to play on, but it seems a really poor way to treat hotel guests. In summary, I've stayed at hundreds of hotels and am used to a minimum level of hospitality that this place...
Read moreThe hotel room was next to the laundry room. Which was insanely loud. The water in the hotel is unsafe to drink, but they don't provide drinking water. They expect you to buy plastic bottles of water and the valley is littered with them. We asked to have our metal reusable water bottles filled at the bar and they said "no" even though we saw him give a glass of water to another person. We were even willing to pay.
There's also a glowing green "exit" sign in each room that you can see from your bed. If light pollution in your room bothers you it is worth noting.
The cave tour and kayak people are nice. The cave was worth seeing.
Reception was nice. The waitresses at the restaurant are nice, but there's a waiter in the evenings who is extremely rude.
The bike paddle boat guy was grumpy.
The meals at the restaurant were over 500 dinar a plate. It makes sense that it is more expensive, since they have to haul everything up the valley.
The valley is beautiful. The water is really cold to swim even in July.
Parking is not ideal and we ended up getting scammed 3,000 dinar with that.
I think people may be a bit desperate after covid.
Loud room, a lack of drinking water being provided, and the rude waiter caused...
