The Cave has been hyped as the latest craze in Muscat for a new set of dining venues. A group of six of us decided to try "The Cloud" Lebanese or whatever restaurant. We arrived at around 8:30 PM, clearly after the initial Iftar crowd had already eaten so the restaurant was only around a 1/4 full.
When we arrived, we were offered a seat inside or outside. Since there was a plethora of empty seats outside next to giant cooling units, we decided to sit outside. After a few minutes, we called over the waiter to turn on the fan. he scrambled for several minutes and then offered to move us since he couldn't find an extension to power the machine already in place.
We ordered food and drinks. During the order, one of the guests at our table asked for the appetizer to come before his main meal while all others wanted the food to come out all at once. He repeated the order so we thought this might actually work... After a long wait, we got our drinks but had to ask for extra glasses because they only brought 4. The 1.5 OR "Lemon Ice Tea" I ordered was nothing more than Limpton Lemon Ice tea from a can that had been poured into a glass.
After around another 45 minutes, the food finally came out. The appetizer ordered (and requested to come out before the other food) came out with all of the rest of the food but without the main course for that particular guest. Other items that should have come out with the food, including hummus, didn't make it out with the other food either.
As for the food, it can be best described as cheap, ready-made, unappetizing ingredients. The calamari came out cold and with the consistency of rubber that wouldn't break. The Honey and Lime Chicken dish had yellow rice that was probably steamed in a bag and the chicken was likely frozen for quite some time due to the consistency. I could always be wrong on my assumptions for the way the food was prepared, but if I am wrong about the cooking process, I am certainly not wrong about the quality and taste.
The servers were clearly "winging" it and a few employees who were wearing suites (presumably managers), hung out near the doors between the inside and outside portion. It appeared they didn't want to interact with customers or "deal" with what appears to be a pretty lousy operation.
We paid the bill and there was a survey attached. In true fashion, the lowest rating you could mark in a given category was "fair". We changed that and added a "poor" column for many of the categories.
Overall, even if they get their alcohol license, this will be just another place that tourists will get suckered into going because of the outside appearance. I won't go back unless there are profound changes to the food and management.
