It’s Sunday night, raining and I’m half way through my two day Colca tour. My fellow tour companions are in Chivay for the night while I’m in the nearby town of Yanque. I’ve landed in Sabores Andinos Colca restaurant in the main plaza just before 6pm and interrupted Mum and her four year old daughter doing some activity at one of the dining tables. I’m greeted and seated, menu provided, cerveza ordered, pork with papas chips and vegetables selected. Mum disappears with her husband to prepare my meal while their four year old is left to entertain me in the dining room. It’s amazing what a simple balloon can do to break any communication barrier. Oblivious to what’s happening in the kitchen, we (a four year old and an Abuelo aged diner) are having a fun time patting a balloon about the dining room! Giggles abound. Then my meal arrives and Mum must have given instructions to her daughter to not bother me as I eat…. And eat, I do, a simple meal, but cooked well with each component complimenting the others. Can’t fault a thing, pork is tasty, chips crisp, veg el-dente and most importantly all three plate ingredients are hot!! A good meal, prepared and cooked with care and served within a welcoming...
Read moreAn unbelievable meal that is not just good for this small town, but better than most we had in Arequipa. The trout (trucha frita) is perfectly cooked and seasoned, the papitas Colca side has local potatoes in a delicious mildly creamy sauce with herbs. Quinoa side was light and flavourful. Even the spaghetti alfredo, which we wanted for a change, was fairly solid. Very kind couple that runs the restaurant, and their young daughter loves talking to guests too. Well priced compared to all the tourist buffets etc. in the area. If you’re in Yanque or passing by, please don’t miss out. This spot has me and my...
Read moreA restaurant that pleasantly surprised us. The place is small, very clean and at first glance ordinary, but the quality of the food is amazing. The portions are large, beautifully arranged, and the attitude is friendly and very kind. We were served very quickly. The roasted alpaca with a side of French fries and quinoa with vegetables is an excellent choice. The tomato and avocado salad and the meat soup tasted excellent and looked like they belonged to a Michelin star restaurant. We wish we could have stayed longer in this village if only for the...
