Solar do Peixe — Restaurant in Alcochete

Very bad experience as an American tourist. The server was very rude. They priced 1kg fish for 50 euros, but when I asked to weigh, because it was looking small it turned out to be 670 gms.

We ordered another fish.

While making the payment, I noticed, the server charged us for the bread etc which is always complimentary, we did not order the same. When I asked, why are you charging us for the free bread and some sauce, he said it is Portugal, you have to pay.

I DID NOT order, he started making faces. I have been around the world and been to many countries in Europe, this kind of treatment is not expected just to win few Euros.

We went to this restaurant today to have a lunch- it started very promising with the setting being authentic, the restaurant neat and cosy and the service friendly. We ordered a grilled squid and a sea bass for 2. It was fresh, but the dishes looked and tasted boring (and also way to salty). The biggest disappointment was the bill. We were charged 21€ for the squid and 32€ for the fish- the price on the menu was per kg and we feel like the weight has had a "tourist tax" added to it. Great, slightly upscale restaurant, by the river front with fresh fish you can chose directly from the display. The clams (amêijoas à bulhão pato) were especially delicious. The staff was lovely and attentive. The only think not so good was the desert (cheesecake). Not cheap but also not unreasonably expensive and absolutely worth the visit.
