Lugar ao Sul — Restaurant in Amadora

There are 2 things that are exceptional about this restaurant.

1. Regional cuisine executed with perfection: I am no expert on Alentejo cuisine, yet I can appreciate any food when it is cooked right . Gazpacho with figs and pears was very smart, fresh, and matched with fried sardine very well. Pork feet with coriander was ridiculously good.

2. Service and hospitality culture: This is something I enjoyed and appreciated throughout all my trip, since I found hospitality in Lisbon very genuine and personal. However, the hospitality in Lugar ao Sul manages to stand out even in Lisbon. We felt like we were at an old friend's house.

This is one of those rare places where you come for the first time and feel at home, due to the rare emphatically service but also the contrast entering this small, rustically decorated cosy place with soft pop music, natural acoustics and plenty of natural light from the streets of Amadora.

The menu is alentejano, short, often changing with an exiting wine card with fair prices.

We were two for lunch that shared the eggs with Esparagus, the delicious caldeirada de cação, porco alentejano, two excellent bottles of wine, two desserts and coffee and waters for €45/pax.

Num mundo cada vez mais dominado por restaurantes “instagramáveis”, fusões arrojadas e menus pensados para agradar a influencers, o Lugar ao Sul é uma lufada de ar fresco – ou melhor, uma lufada de cheiro a ensopado, migas e carne de porco à alentejana.

Este pequeno restaurante, genuinamente modesto e acolhedor, não quer saber de tendências nem de likes. Aqui serve-se comida como antigamente: daquelas que lembram os almoços de domingo na casa da avó, onde o sabor vinha do tempo, do carinho e dos ingredientes certos.

A simpatia do atendimento faz-nos sentir logo em casa. Não há pressas nem poses – apenas boa disposição, um sorriso franco e a vontade de bem servir. O espaço é pequeno, quase familiar, o que só torna a experiência mais calorosa e autêntica.

É um dos últimos redutos onde a comida alentejana é respeitada como merece, sem truques nem modernices. Um verdadeiro tesouro num tempo em que a tradição parece estar sempre em risco de desaparecer.
