What an odd experience… I called the Coffee Cabana phone number in Facebook to find out if the place was open: Me: Is this Coffee Cabana (CC)? CC: I am the owner. Me: Oh, are you open? CC: I don’t know, I’m not there. They will be open soon, call back. Me: Um, OK An hour later, I had the desk manager at my hotel make the call, this time to the number listed above in Google. After a lengthy conversation he said, “That was the cell number of a guy who worked there a year ago. He has no idea what their hours are. He has been trying for months to get Google to remove his number. By the way, I’ve lived in Sao Mateus all my life and I’ve never heard of this place.” I decided to try the owner’s phone again… Me: Hello, I’m the guy who called an hour ago to see if you were open. CC: Yes, I am open. Me: What are your hours today? CC: I don’t know, I’m only here when there is business. I’m a farmer. I’m busy and I can’t stay in one place all the time. Me: I understand, is there someone else who will be there around 2:00? CC: There’s another guy, but he is busy too. I’m open now. Me: I can’t make it until about 2:00. CC: I can’t guarantee I’ll be here. Call back then. The hotel manager I was talking with looked at the reviews and said, “I think all the reviews are from his friends.” I suspect he is right. I...

Marcel and his team know good coffee. Hand-grown, hand-harvested, small batch, shade grown, organic coffee, great varietals (Caturra and Yellow Bourbon at the time of this writing). Unique custom process, and perhaps most important, lightly expertly roasted and fresh!
If none of this makes sense don't worry, just come and try some, it's delicious . The siphon pot preparation in the cafe is a nice touch, and makes for a very clean brew.
The owner Marcel was warm and welcoming, and took me on a walk around the plantation, which is managed completely using ecological, organic methods. Fun fact - the coffee and banana trees have a symbiotic relationship, and the presence of the banana trees has a subtle effect on the flavor...
Read moreThis place was such a hidden gem. We showed up an hour before closing but no one was around but there was a number on the door so we texted it. They had to step out for the afternoon but said they’d make us a coffee after hours if we were still around. We were so glad we went back because it was the best cup of coffee we’d had our entire trip. Everything at the cafe is local, they grow their own beans, bananas, use local dairy etc. we had a banana cheese cake as well and it was delicious. Also bought a few bags of beans for home. The staff running the place was so accommodating and friendly, we really appreciated the hospitality. If we’re every back on the island we will be back to coffee cabana and would stay on the grounds in the little...
