From the outside, stood on the cobbled street under the castle wall looking in, itâs very dark. The signposts all point to the Medieval Tavern, which didnât seem that promising as an idea for a lunch venue. However, looks can be deceiving. We really enjoyed a tableful of lovely local food (three types of bread, ham, cheese and fruit [apple, melon, grape], three types of pie [meat and veg; meat and apple -sweet so have last; cod and peppers] all in a light pastry, salted and herbed tomatoes: tuna slices), alongside very tasty local craft ales (IPA and standard ale were available today - apparently other flavours appear through the year). The waitress and service was excelllent - warm, helpful and friendly. She was really good with the two youngsters on the next table in deciding their order - great customer service. As a sign of how nice a place this is, the couple on the other side had deliberately returned here to end their three week holiday. It is well signposted but you can also look for the yellow, red and green âflagsâ below the old...

We went here for a light lunch with a drink but we were never able to order lunch. We were initially told we could order lunch in 30 minutes as he was too busy so we sat down with a drink. After 30 minutes we tried to order but instead the server took someone else's order. He later ignored us. Then came to give someone else food who arrived after us and hadn't ordered anything, telling them that it was the Portuguese way to not order but just to bring food, they replied that they live here in Portugal. The server then tried to say sorry but not truly as he still wouldn't let us order. We were confused and disappointed and couldn't understand. I don't...
Read moreWhat an awesome place, has an authentic vibe with large wooden tables, all candle lit and old art on the walls. It's full of character and the service was very nice and friendly. They had 2 artisan beers when I visit, a fig beer and ginger beer. They were both delicious. I wanted to try mead and it did not dissapoint! All the food we got was fresh, best mellon I've had during the winter along with grapes and pears. We got an authentic portuguese sausage that is cooked at your table(highly recommend) with some of the best sourdough bread I had on the trip. They have some costumes for kids and adults as well as some shields and swords for some great photo opportunities. There is also a cool courtyard where you can walk around or eat outside where you can see the castle. All in all a must visit will...
