O Cantinho — Restaurant in Celorico de Basto

We went to this restaurant last summer and loved it. We returned expecting a similar experience but were sadly disappointed. First of all, the woman told us that there was no "prato do dia." This fixed meal usually includes soup, a drink, and a hot dish. Everyone else, locals, was eating this, but we were instructed to choose from the menu--which is more expensive. We live in Portugal and understand the beauty of the prato do dia. The woman was aggressively upselling us for everything. I asked for a small house wine, and she tried to bring me a bottle. We ordered a small bottle of water, and she tried to bring a large one. Everything was more than we asked for. When the bill came, I was shocked, but we did eat the appetizers that they often stick onto the tables of foreigners--if you don't eat them, you don't pay for them. When I got to the car and checked the bill again, I saw she had charged me double for the turkey steak I ate. I returned and, without hardly looking at the check, she pulled 8 euros out of the register and apologized to me. I don't think she was sincere. I do believe she charged me double on purpose. O Cantino. Just fantastic. Delicious home style cooked dishes. The 1 dose steaks are enormous so don't be afraid to ask for a 1/2 dose. The punched potatoes ( batatas murros ) are so tasty. This is about the third time I have been here - always very good service and food that is good for the soul. The red wine served in jugs ( canecas ) is smooth and goes down very well. A senhora que nos atendeu parecia que não tinha muito vontade de lá trabalhar. Pedimos a posta à Cantinho e o Bacalhau. A posta pedimos o ponto da carne médio e veio bem e o Bacalhau em algumas partes cru. A posta parecia reaquecida e não cozinhada no momento. Aliás veio para a mesa em 5min.

Na sobremesa pedimos mousse de chocolate e baba de camelo. Perguntamos se eram caseiras e se eram fresquinhas e claro que para vender o produto disseram que sim, mas não estavam, a baba de camelo nem era cremosa e mousse de chocolate era seca na parte de cima ou seja não era fresca.

Recusamos de imediato a baba de camelo e a funcionária explicou-nos como era feito como quem diz "é normal ser assim" só que não.

Podia ter tido uma nota melhor se o atendimento fosse mais prestativo e simpático uma vez que a comida também...
