A Charming Culinary Experience with a Family Touch - The Affordable Restaurant with Delicious Traditional Dishes and Homemade Sangria in Madeira
Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting a small restaurant in Madeira run by a warm and welcoming family. This unassuming eatery promises mouthwatering traditional dishes at affordable prices, and it absolutely delivers. What's more, one of the delightful surprises was the delicious homemade Sangria they served.
From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with a homely ambiance and a friendly welcome from the hosts. It was evident that the love for Madeira's culinary heritage was at the heart of this place.
For starters, we chose the famous "Bolo do Caco" bread, and it was a true delight. The bread was freshly baked, incredibly soft, and aromatic. Served with a delectable garlic butter, it was a perfect combination.
For the main course, I opted for a beef dish, while my two companions went for the fish dishes. Each dish was promptly served, visually appealing, and bursting with flavors.
My beef dish was perfectly cooked, tender, and succulent. The seasoning and spices were skillfully balanced, adding a delightful zest to the meat without overpowering its natural taste.
The fish dishes my companions enjoyed were equally impressive. The fish was fresh, tender, and prepared with local ingredients. The combination of fresh fish and a light, flavorful sauce made the dishes a memorable culinary experience.
But the most pleasant surprise came with the homemade Sangria they offered. The refreshing drink was brimming with fresh fruits, and its taste was simply divine. It complemented the dishes perfectly and added a special touch to our meal.
I must also highlight the excellent value for money that this restaurant offers. With generous portions, high-quality dishes, and the delightful homemade Sangria, all at such affordable prices, it truly exceeded our expectations.
The service was warm and personalized. The family running the restaurant exuded genuine enthusiasm for their traditional cuisine, making guests feel right at home.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend this small restaurant in Madeira. It provides a family-oriented atmosphere, delectable traditional dishes, irresistible homemade Sangria, and all at affordable prices, driven by the passion and dedication of a family. Read moreAlta Vista is up the hillside in a residential area, far from the commercial part of Funchal, with great views from the balcony seats out over the city below. It's a no-frills, good, honest meal sort of place, where they will assess you and recommend the dish they think you'll like. I had a massive steak with garlic and orange, accompanied by chips, rice, and a large salad. Once my wife mentioned she's vegan, our host immediately recommended a potato dish that was sort of like a large rösti, but with other vegetables mixed in, also accompanied by a large salad. When my wife suggested chips, she was told she didn't need any, and that was true. Both our platters were large and overflowing with food. And this was after the homemade bolo de caco (with olive oil instead of butter). I finished with a rich chocolate mousse, but my wife was too full for dessert. Note that if your map app recommends approaching from the south you'll be heading up an extremely steep road; the approach from the west past the Botanic gardens is...
Read moreWe were very excited to try out this restaurant after reading all the reviews. We were a bit disappointed though. I ate the espada com banana, which was tasty but excessively greasy. That was three days ago and since then, I've had diarrhea. All the other food I ate was stuff I'd been having every day on the holiday. I read another recent comment that they also got food poisoning. My husband had an espetada, which was okay, although we waited a lot for the food. The place itself is not impressive at all. When you look around, you don't understand what other people liked so much about this place. In the ladies room there are no lamps and the toilet is ruined. The view is fantastic though, and on the whole, we liked the food. One of the waitresses was very rude, I guess she doesn't like tourists in general. The other one was nice and speaks a little English. In sum, don't have FOMO if you miss this place, but if you do visit it, DO NOT TAKE CAMINHO DO MOINHO, it is insanely steep and I was scared to death to drive...
