Restaurante Cancela Velha — Restaurant in Marco de Canaveses

Today for lunch was my first time at Cancela Velha. It was busy but no waiting, seated immediately. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Was with my brother and our Portuguese language teacher. We all ordered the soup (nabissa), breads and olives and cheese appetizers, bacalhau cakes, daily special (pescado and arroz com gelho). Appetizers, soup, and daily fish and rice specials were delicious. I particularly enjoyed the rice. We ordered some traditional deserts, natas de ceu, pudin, bolo traditional. Deserts were delicious especially the natas de ceu. We ordered an apple turnover to take home for our mom. Our server said “warm it slightly and serve with ice cream”, which of course we did. Our mom is 92 and she has tried a lot of apple turnovers in her 9+ decades, and she said “this is the best I have tasted, get more next time please.” Overall an excellent experience and since we are now locals, we will...

Today I went for lunch with my parents at Cancelha Velha and it was an amazing experience. Starting with Sr . Manuel Monteiro he was a fantastic Host with great energy and joyfully. Then he did order the typical Portuguese Sunday roast lunch " Anho " that is a spring lamb and it was outstanding 👌 👏 10 out of 10 , congratulations to the Chefs! Then the deserts , all homemade , they all look delicious but taste even better . And at last but not less important , the house red wine , produced in Douro valley was great. I would recommend Cancela Velha without hesitation. Definitely will be back in my next visit...

“Best Cabrito Asado in Portugal” “Unbelievable wine list, just amazing”

A hidden jewel in the middle of Portugal, just half an hour from the Douro River, we found this great restaurant, family owned, spectacular grilling, local cuisine and a very friendly staff.

The grilled Alheira was flawless, perfectly seasoned and deliciously grilled!

And of course the grilled goat was stunning, so good!

The wine list is just unbelievable, Douro selection is insane, 2008 and 2011 still available from many Quintas…

Desserts: my wife still day dreaming with the almond cake!
