I agree with prior reviewers that the food is quite good. I don't know if it is that much better than comparable marisqueira/pastelaria/snack bar/tasca but the prices are much higher than those in comparable establishments even ones in the center of Lisbon.
The reality is Joaquim hides his tourist trapping tactics behind a gregarious facade. He included items we did not want on our bill even after we had explicitly rejected those items when he brought them to the table. He also told us that he accepts credit cards and then pulled the trick of using a broken credit card machine - one that he informed us hasn't worked in two years which seems like more than a reasonable amount of time to have it repaired. He also overcharged us on each glass of wine and attributed it to the fact that he had given us a "big pour" - I didn't see this as a line item in the menu. The reason we had asked about the credit cards in the first place is because we didn't have any atm cards with us so in the end we had to go to the Santander atm across the street and pay the exorbitant cash advance fee to withdraw money with a credit card to pay for the bill.
All in all, if you have cash on you and stay mindful of his tactics you can probably have a decent experience. Please be more careful...
Read moreI ordered the clams and they were very tasty. The portions were generous, and the food was good — not fancy, just genuinely tasty. The staff was very friendly. That evening was quite noisy, both outside and inside the restaurant, because of football fans. We ordered one dish to take away, and that turned out to be a bit of an issue — they didn’t have proper takeaway containers, but we figured something out. Overall, it’s a decent place for dinner.
One thing I didn’t like much: they brought appetizers and bread to the table without asking, and apparently you’re only charged for what you eat. But I couldn’t help wondering how many tables that same plate had already been on that day... If they want to offer local appetizers, they could just put out a few pieces for free. That way guests wouldn’t end up eating what others...
Read moreThe reviews are not lying. If you are searching for a traditional restaurant with a homely feel, this place needs more love. Extraordinary service from the warm and welcoming Joaquim, the food was simple yet excellent and tasted like something your local Portuguese grandmother would make. The only thing I regret is that we didn’t tip more. If you are ever taking a trip to see the wonderful caves surrounding this area, please make a stop here for dinner, you will not regret it. Warmest regards to Joaquin and the...
