Restaurante La Barca — Restaurant in Praia da Vitória

We had a disastrous visit to this restaurant six days ago. Our fish came - after an hour’s wait - but was inedible as it was hardly cooked inside. We sent it back and waited for it to come back. When it came, it still wasn’t cooked through, and the vegetables with it had gone cold. We decided to leave and asked for our bill. When it came, we were astonished to see they had charged us full price for the expensive fish dish so we asked for a discount, given the fish was inedible. The waiter was very apologetic but said there was nothing he could do as there was no manager around. He was away, we were told. There was no one to authorise the reduction. Rather than getting into an argument we paid up but said we were very disappointed with the food (we pointed out that anyone who knew anything about cooking would not have tried to cook a piece of fish 5 cms thick, solely by grilling it) and the customer service. In the past, I've always ordered the pizza, because their pizza is excellent. However, tonight I was in the mood for steak and decided to take a chance on their filet mignon and was thoroughly impressed, especially for the price.

First, it was large and thick - looked like it was in the 8 ounce/225 g range. Second, it was cooked properly. I typically order my steak medium-rare, and many restaurants overcook it. La Barca did not. It was nicely seared and approximately half pink with a red center, which gave it a perfectly tender texture. Finally, it had a wonderful coriander flavoring that nicely complemented the roasted potatoes.

We stumbled upon this place during our summer vacation and thought, looks good let's check it out! So glad we did, we ended up coming back for 3 nights in a row prior to leaving Terceira. Their food was exquisite, great tasting, abundant portions and pricing was extremely favorable considering all that you get. Great selection and variety of food. My wife doesn't eat meat, and for an island that is very selected with "vegetarian choices" this place had plenty to choose from. Certainly looking forward to coming back for vacation and...
