Snack-bar Aço — Restaurant in São Roque do Pico

In short, I would go back.

We were initially put off by the appearance of the snack bar because we didn't see the door leading to the restaurant area. The initial room looks like a small bar where you would not really want to hang around. We thought we might just be getting takeaway but then the waitress lead us into a decent looking small restaurant and through to a covered garden area. We asked to sit inside mainly because there were people smoking at the tables outside. We ordered from the burger menu which comes with fries so is very cheap relative to the prices we've been subjected to on the islands. Other menu items are more usual. The burgers were tasty. If going back we would probably order 3 between the two of us as after an active day, we wanted to feel full. But you could do that given that for our two meals and two soft drinks the total was just under fifteen euros. The waitress was very officious and always in a hurry. Not much warmth but not rude either. You just have to brace yourself for that. They were very good about adapting my husband's order as he wanted something slightly different. They didn't come back to check if everything was ok and we had to go looking for someone when we wanted to pay and leave. Home made Azorian food at it's best...:) I started almost every morning by having a Tosta Mista and coffee at Aco. Then I always waitedfor the afternoon buffet starting a 12:00 noon. Now it gets better, the variety of food, the quality and the service combined with an awesome bottle of Pico red wine. I was in heaven. The food was prepared by two women in the back Kitchen that takes care to bring you authentic Portuguese cuisine just like my mother made. Our lunch there lasted 2h30, so if you are in a rush I would not recommend going there. The food was good overall, but heavily balanced with a slow and bad service. It took more than one hour just to take our order; both drinks and dishes were partly wrong when they brought those to our table (or incomplete). Even paying took 10 minutes..
