The local specialty, chanfana, was truly excellent. The food is superb, the service very pleasant, and the prices are completely reasonable. The restaurant is small in size, but the atmosphere is great, and it's not overrun by tourists, so one feels comfortable here. However, one thing shocked me: an altar with photographs and busts of the dictator Salazar. I asked the waitress, and apparently, there is still some sentiment among the locals towards the hometown figure, and the restaurant sees it as a mere "reminder of a local figure." Personally, I find it absolutely distasteful, so I haven't returned to the restaurant. Great food, the staff is friendly, and if you sit outside, the little alleyway it is located in is cosy and has its charm. They don't speak English or Spanish, or any other language other than Portuguese, but they find a way to communicate. Inside there is memorabilia of Portugal's dictator Salazar, it is not much, but if you are interested in history, the few bits and pieces in their makes it obvious that Sant Comba Dão was the birthplace of this dictator, and that some people still admire him. I personally am not educated enough to understand or place judgement on anything other than the wonderful food...

This is a restaurant not to be missed if you are visiting Santa Comba Dão. The ambience is simple and down to earth. They are open for lunch every weekday but not always for dinner. They open very early in the day and serve a lot of as takeaway. The food is really delicious and the owners (man and wife) are so eager to help and welcoming that you feel you belong there as a cherished customer from the very start. Don’t be put off by its fame as a recommendation for tourists - you’ll see that it is also very much patronized by the locals (even cats at the sitting area on the narrow street outside… as...
