First Impressions Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were greeted with an unwelcoming entrance. Despite having a reservation, a staff member passed by and simply said he would be back in 5 minutes. While waiting, I attempted to order a wine at the bar. I asked for green wine, but the bartender was completely unhelpful, showing me the menu with red and rosé options without offering anything specific just pointing at pages.
Seating and Service After a considerable wait, we were finally shown to our seats, which were less than desirable. I had to remind the staff of our reservation before we were escorted to the terrace. The order was taken quickly, but the service did not improve from there.
Starters and Timing Issues We ordered limpets and fish soup. Both dishes arrived within 15 minutes. The limpets tasted like chewing gum and were flavorless, with only a hint of lemon. The fish soup, priced at 12 euros, was underwhelming and comparable to a simple bar soup, not what one would expect at a nice restaurant. After finishing our starters, no one cleared our plates for about 20 minutes. Only when I moved the plates to the side did they notice and remove them.
Main Course Delays The wait for the main courses was excruciating. After 40 minutes, I called a waiter to express our dissatisfaction and threatened to leave if the food was not served within 10 minutes. This seemed to expedite our order, but it was already 21:30, two hours after our arrival.
We ordered black scabbardfish with banana and the daily special, Dorada. The black scabbardfish was a major letdown, tasting bland with an odd combination of grilled banana. This dish paled in comparison to a similar meal we had in Funchal two days prior, which was delicious. The Dorada was undercooked, and the rice with limpets was just plain rice with minimal tomato paste and only one limpet found.
Overall, this restaurant was the biggest dining disappointment during our seven-day stay on Madeira. The service was poor, the food tasteless, and the prices exorbitant for the quality received. We do not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a pleasant...
Read moreCame here for my birthday lunch with my husband. We made reservations for 12 when they opened, and we were the first and only table for about 1 hour (early February). So it was nice to have the place to ourselves! We sat outside, BEAUTIFUL view!
There is ample parking and the restaurant had plenty of seating, but I imagine this place gets quite full - so make a reservation in advance.
Amazing service! Food was good and beautifully presented, but I didn't think it was amazing. I stared with the tomato/onion soup which was flavorful and had a LOT of onions in it. My husband got the pumpkin soup, which we both thought needed more flavor.
I eat mostly plant-based, so I got the vegetarian skewer (which I expected to be vegetables, but it was actually a vegan meat substitute - I probably could have asked what it was but I didn't think to based on the menu listing). My husband got the Portuguese style chicken with potatoes and vegetables. He said the chicken was very good but under-seasoned and thought the gravy was as well.
We finished with a 15 year Madeira wine which was amazing! We have pretty small appetites so we skipped a started and dessert.
I think what they say is true that the better the view, the food doesn't have to be as impressive, and that was my experience here. It was still well worth it and the grounds were just beautiful. I probably wouldn't come back to it, but think it is worth visiting at least once if you are in Madeira.
Plenty of parking and there are some other dining options in this area - pizza and something else we saw. Would give those a try. You can also just walk to the view point here if you want to park and see but skip...
Read moreOne of the best spots on the island! I saw some good and some not so good reviews, so we weren’t sure what to expect…. Let me break it down: The view: sitting outside is definitely worth it, the view was fabulous. The waves, the scent of the grill, and the sunset colors: made our decision to sit outside worth it even if it was a bit cold. The food: my friend had the tuna skewer, I had the tortellini. I think I could have just lived off the garnishing options. The French fries with their local herbs was delicious and the potatoes were soft, fresh, and not oily at all. Their lock vegetables, were soft but not too soft. Delicious. Dessert (I considered to make that a separate review): The pumpkin tatin with sage ice cream - was amazing. The sage alone might be too rich and unusual, but amazing together and so unique! My friend had the apple with ice cream - more sweet and so not my type, but also very good.
Service: I think all of Madeira is a bit in island time 😂. However, they were kind, helpful, more appeasing than we even needed! … the bill took a bit, but that’s not something to complain about as we are on holiday. Attentive staff that...
