Lamelas — Restaurant in Sines

A serious disappointment. Some starters were good, like the gazpacho or the fried calamari, but others were uninspired, like the octopus or the tocinho lard. The main courses were significantly worse. The clam and hake dish was much, much too salted and the clams were ok, but should have been better this close to Sines. When asked, we complained about the salt but no-one seemed to care. The migas was very poor indeed, no flavour of pork or chorico inside. The meat it came with was easily 70% bone and what little meat there was was really poor quality supermarket level pork. The seafood rice was nice enough, but plenty of restaurants in Sines and Sesimbra will cook it just as well, and will not give you just 3 shrimps or charge you 35 euro for it. Finally, the wine service was poor, the wrong bottle was brought, we had to ask for larger glasses which were not offered automatically for a wine that needed them.

I'm disappointed by the restaurant's response to my review, which has subsequently been removed by the restaurant. For clarity's sake, my wife is Portuguese and my parents in-law live on a monte near Castro Verde. I have been coming to the Alentejo for over 20 years and have eaten in many restaurants around Beja, Castro Verde, Vidigueira and many other places in the Alentejo and across Portugal. We are very familiar with Alentejo cuisine. What's more my wife's grandparents were local fishermen so we also have a lot of experience with seafood across the Alentejo and Setubal coast.

It's therefore sad to read the response which essentially says I'm a foreigner who knows nothing about the local cuisine and culture. I think a bit of self-reflection from the management is lacking in this establishment. To wit, none of the staff tasted the very very salty dish, to check if we were right. It clearly was a kitchen error, since all the other dishes had no such problems.

It's also frustrating to hear that the ingredients are top notch and that therefore the prices for seafood rice etc are high. The three (!) prawns used were not especially good, rather average in fact. The clams were just basic clams, rather than say the black clams that can be more difficult to source, etc. I would advise the discerning foodie to look elsewhere, especially in light of the glib, tone-deaf and condescending...

WOW WOW WOW!! We heard about this place from the Rota Vincentina website. It has a great story about the origins of the cuisine and the owner and we were super excited to try it out.

The place wildly exceeded our expectations. Our server was ridiculously kind, gave us fantastic recommendations, and was excited to talk about the food and culture/customs underlying each dish. From the minute we walked in, she was incredibly kind and welcoming. We speak very little Portuguese and she was very willing to converse in English (and her English was excellent, not that that is any kind of requirement in our minds, but made the experience even better!)

The food was SPECTACULAR. The menu was varied (reflective of the season, and the Alentejo region, which offered another level of enjoyment and interest for us. The appetizers were all nicely plated, and different, and portioned. The main dishes were very well portioned to allow for a multi course meal without feeling stuffed by the end, but still deeply satisfying. I got a fish and clams dish in a verde sauce for my main and it was probably my favorite single item I've had in Portugal (I'm no expert, but have been here for 7 days and do explicitly seek out interesting culinary experiences). The fish was cooked ridiculously well. It was tender, flavorful, just wow.

The overall vibe of the place, despite a well trained and well reviewed chef and a delicious, varied menu, was very laid back. We were happy to chat, laugh, and overall it felt homey and welcoming. Exactly our vibe and far superior to a 'fancier' (whatever that word may mean to you) dining experience elsewhere. It fit the smaller town vibe of Porto Covo perfectly in our opinion. Everything was local, from the wines, to the dishes, to the ingredients!!

We had multiple glasses of wine, 2 desserts, two aperitifs, bread, an appetizer, and 2 main dishes for 80 euro. While not cheap, it was an absolutely stunningly wonderful experience and, assuming it's in your budget, you HAVE TO TRY this restaurant. It was the best dining experience we had in Portugal, and probably a top 3 dining experience (from food, to service, to culture) that we've ever...

Acabei de jantar no Lamelas e sinto-me triste, por um restaurante com uma chef tão talentosa como a Ana ter uma equipa que faz tão pouco.. Vamos por partes, não tinha reserva visto o restaurante estar todo reservado. No entanto, foi-me dito ao telefone que poderia passar por volta das 8.45pm para ver se tinha havido algum cancelamento de última hora. Chegando ao restaurante havia várias mesas vazias, dentro na sala e na varanda do restaurante, nas foi-me apresentada só um alternativa de mesa na sala. Não gostando muito do local da mesa, pedi se era possível aguardar para trocar de mesa, o que foi possível.. A senhora que nos atendeu à entrada foi muito prestável ao nos apresentar o menu, mas depois de nos servir os cocktails, desapareceu e nunca mais falamos com ela. É a partir da entrega dos cocktails que começa uma saga de abandono e indiferença que não esperava neste tipo de restaurante. Entre o cocktail e entrada e a chegada dos pratos principais passou-se 1h sem que ninguém nos tenha perguntado se queríamos mais entradas, tendo em conta a demora, ou se queriamos mais cocktails ou até começar com o vinho... nada! Durante 1h podiamos ter bebido mais e pedido mais entradas, tendo em conta a demora dos pratos. Quando vieram levantar a mesa para colocar os pratos, perquntei se não me iam perguntar que vinho queria, pois estava há 1h à espera, quando a empregada de mesa saiu, foi buscar o menu dos vinhos e me atirou literalmente o menu sem sequer me perguntar se tinha preferência por algum vinho ou dar alguma sugestão. Chamando à atenção do péssimo serviço, a dita empregada disse-me um 'obrigada' cheio de arrogância e ainda foi para dentro da sala contar aos colegas e a rir-se na minha cara quando se apercebeu que eu estava a ver... uma total ausência de profissionalismo e seriedade e uma total falta de respeito para com o cliente. Não me lembro de ter tido um atendimento tão mau na vida! Mau demais para ser verdade. Quanto à comida, o arroz de marisco estava divinal. Quanto à açorda com linguado ficou aquém do esperado.. o linguado estava muito bom, mas a açorda estava um pouco sem sabor e morna. A sobremesa de migas com ovos e nozes estava deliciosa. Ah, e o cocktail, a Marguerita de coentros, é mesmo especial. No final a chef Ana veio à mesa desculpar-se pela desastrosa noite. Sem culpa, mas disse-lhe que um restaurante como o dela precisa de uma equipa mais eficiente e educada. A comida é boa, mas o serviço é péssimo. Como para mim, que frequento os melhores restaurantes, a comida tem que ser aliada de um bom serviço, no Lamelas, esteve longe de acontecer. A noite soube a muito pouco. Uma pena. Merece melhor, mas para isso acontecer tem que haver mudanças.

EDIT: Chef Ana, obrigada por se ter dado ao trabalho de responder, mas seja honesta como eu fui! O restaurante estava longe de estar cheio e por isso não é verdade que fizeram um esforço para nos acomodar. Não quero saber se a sua equipa é elogiada pelos serviços prestados. Comigo e com o meu marido não foi! Não a equipa toda, mas uma funcionária em especial que foi completamente desrespeitosa e malcriada. Se prefere optar por fechar os olhos à falta de profissionalismo da sua funcionária, problema seu. Quanto a ter que ser eu a pedir entradas, vinho ou que for é anedótico. Qualquer bom restaurante devia ter uma pessoa designada da equipa para o fazer. Vir de vez em quando à mesa e perguntar, principalmente se os pratos vão demorar a sair. Básico. Sabe uma coisa? Falta alma ao seu restaurante. Ou talvez a si. Não leve como um ataque, mas sim um alerta, nunca vi uma chef tão triste como você. Talvez seja só cansaço. Ou não. Leia as reviews e verá clientes a reclamar de alguns pontos mencionados aqui. Em 3 semanas de Portugal, o Lamelas foi, sem sombra de dúvidas, a nossa pior experiência. E como disse o meu marido que adora Portugal, a nossa comida e as nossas gentes "This restaurant was my worse experience in Portugal.
