SHiRO — Restaurant in Riyadh Region

We visited this place for Iftar, so it wasn't very crowded at the time. This Al-Arid branch isnt particularly large, but it is well decorated and had this authentic Japanese restaurant vibe. Gahwa and dates were offered as it was Ramadhan and was time for breaking of fast.

We ordered two different sushi rolls, tuna nigiri, seaweed salad, gyoza, prawn tempura and chicken katsu. While the food was decent, it didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by their marketing, advertisements, and reviews. The seaweed salad was refreshing, but it was served on a bed of julienned cucumber and rockets, which had the chance to mixed in with the seaweed and took away from its distinct flavour. The sushi rolls (salmon california and crunchy crab roll) were delicious and the nigiri came with a generous cut of tuna. However, the prawn tempura was a major let down. The batter lacked the signature typical light and airy texture of authentic Japanese tempura, and the accompanying sauce was an unfamiliar soy-based dip which i could not figure out rather than the traditional tentsuyu or light dipping soy sauce. Chicken katsu, though coated with a crispy batter, had an overpowering sauce over it.

Despite these shortcomings, the overall taste was fairly decent. Considering the price, other Japanese restaurants in Riyadh offer better options. We’d likely return, but probably just...

I had a very unpleasant and potentially dangerous experience after eating at this restaurant. Within a few hours of consuming the raw salmon, I experienced intense nausea, vomiting, stomach pain that felt like stabbing cramps, and eventually severe diarrhea. I take food safety seriously, and this kind of reaction is a red flag — especially when eating raw fish, which should be handled and stored with extreme care.

Whether it was improper storage, handling, or quality, something was clearly wrong. I hope the restaurant takes this seriously and reviews its hygiene and food sourcing standards. Others should be aware before ordering...
