A neighborhood Japanese restaurant specializing in sashimi. They have a pretty generous 1-for-1 sashimi platter promotion on the weekends, which involves the use of an impressively large bowl. Aside from that spectacle, the place is just fine for a weekend dinner, though the fact that they recently got a new chef seemed like the source of a few operational hiccups, such as slow service and poorly-sliced sashimi. Liked: - Gyudon. More generous with the size and amount of beef slices than your regular suki-ya bowl, though at commensurate prices. Beef is tender and thinly sliced though I wish the pieces were a little smaller. - California maki. Perfectly serviceable example of california maki. - Salmon and unagi mentaiko maki. Almost too many good things going on in one bite. - Salmon belly and hamachi sashimi. My favorite cuts of the night, possibly. Sweet and unctuous. - Eihire. A good example of the beloved bar snack, and topping the kewpie with a dash of ebiko is a nice touch. - Edamame. It's edamame. Ambivalent - Sashimi promo (shake, maguro, mekajiki). Not sure why, but this felt like a misfire, despite the ample portions. The sashimi was sliced rather irregularly, with some slices being much thicker than others. The maguro was rather tasteless even for maguro, and the mekajiki also lacked that characteristic sweetness. The shake was okay, but in a very donki sort of way - i.e., low quality. All the sashimi were also fridge-cold which might have detracted further from their flavor.

I recently visited Goro Jap Restaurant at Holland Drive and had a simple but satisfying meal. I ordered the California Maki and the Aburi Shake Belly Mentai Sushi. The maki was decent and quite standard—fresh, nicely rolled, and enjoyable but nothing out of the ordinary. However, the real highlight was definitely the aburi salmon belly mentai sushi. The sushi literally melts in your mouth 😍. The balance of creamy mentai sauce, the charred fragrance from the aburi torching, and the richness of the salmon belly came together beautifully. Each bite felt indulgent without being overwhelming. It’s one of those sushi pieces you’d come back for again and again. The atmosphere at Goro Jap is casual and welcoming, making it a nice spot for a fuss-free Japanese meal in the Holland Drive area. Service was prompt and friendly, which made the dining experience even better. Overall, while the maki was more on the average side, the aburi sushi was a standout and made the visit worthwhile. I’d recommend Goro Jap especially if you’re craving deliciously torched sushi that hits the spot!

Read the good reviews and decided to try this place out. We were served poor quality food at high prices. Ridiculous how they were out of hotate and salmon sashimi at 7.30pm, would be nice if the restaurant could take the initiative to let us know beforehand via a call or at the very least, at the door when we stepped in. Most disappointed with the Soft Shell Crab Maki ($14.80). Crab was not even crunchy/crispy, entire maki was stale and hard. The Japanese sushi section in Cold Storage supermarkets probably has better ones. Service was alright but one of the staff stood beside our table for the entire night, which made private table conversations difficult and awkward. Guess we can't expect much from such a no-frills neighbourhood joint but, what a serious letdown. Sushi Tei is better!

Hi Boss of Goro, I really hope you will do something on the poor service standard of your crew. I wld like to specifically point out this particular aunty with a short ponytail. The other aunty was in short hair. I remember it clearly and so I think u should know which staff i am referring to.

I arrived at your restaurant at 150pm and before I could take a seat, the said aunty rushed over and said to me in mandarin “huhhh miss ah, we are closing 230pm leh, you can finish eating or not??” Her voice was so loud that other diners actually looked up. I was taken aback by her tone and response but decided to dine in anyway as I really just wanted to quickly settle my lunch - i told her yes aunty I will eat very fast.

Shortly after, another 2 pax came in too (all these happened before 2pm). Same reaction from the auntie. She let out a loud sighhhhh and told pax firmly that she will start clearing table by 215pm and everybody must leave the restaurant by 230pm. 2nd pax was a young student. Initially auntie REFUSED to let her in/serve her until the girl mentioned she wanted to do takeaway only. Oh btw, auntie also shouted across the tables to the short hair colleague “aiyo u see! Still got people come in leh!”

Throughout the time I was really speechless and offended by her attitude. It was really RUDE. the truth is, I actually just did my booster jab at the nearby CC and i DID check for the closing time and sure was well noted on that. It is made known to the public that ur restaurant closes at 230pm and not 150pm/2pm right? I seriously dont understand why would a service provider REFUSED to serve customers when the customers are not even late? Just bcoz she wants to chope chope close shop and go for break?? Shouldn’t ur staff be happy that the customers love to eat your food and the business is actually doing good?

Secondly, yes as customers we do understand that certain F&B have their own rest time and clearing/cleaning work will definitely take time too. Which is why u all have last order cut off time etc. BUT she could have deliver the message in a more professional way right? if she had informed me in nicer way for eg, “kitchen is closing soon in 20mins, we are happy to serve u but a reminder to finish ur meal within the time frame.” Is it that hard? I dont think so

What I received was the unpleasant tone of voice + negative body language + complaint of me being “late”, the whole dining experience was really awful, just imagine that. I must say your food was so good though- fresh & thick cut of sashimi, yummy unagi, food was tasty!

But i really doubt i will go back again because the service was truly...

If you’re craving an authentic Japanese dining experience, Goro Japanese Cuisine is a must-visit. This cozy yet elegant restaurant brings the best of Japan’s culinary traditions to your table, offering a wide variety of dishes that are sure to satisfy both the traditionalist and the adventurous eater.

The moment you step into Goro Japanese Cuisine, you’re greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel as though you’re stepping into a local eatery in Japan. The minimalist, serene dĂ©cor sets the perfect tone for an enjoyable dining experience, while the attentive and knowledgeable staff make sure you're well taken care of throughout your meal.

One of the standout features of Goro is the quality of the ingredients. Every dish is made with fresh, high-quality produce and fish, which shines through in every bite. Whether you’re indulging in their sushi, sashimi, or one of their hearty donburi bowls, the freshness of the ingredients is apparent.

The sushi and sashimi are incredibly fresh and beautifully presented. The Omakase experience is highly recommended for those looking to explore a wide variety of flavors, as it allows the chef to showcase their expertise and creativity with a selection of dishes tailored to your preferences.

Another crowd-pleaser is their Ramen, which is rich and flavorful, with the broth being deep and aromatic. Whether you choose the classic tonkotsu or the spicy miso, you’re guaranteed a bowl that’s both comforting and satisfying.

For those looking for something different, the Grilled Yaki dishes, such as the Yakitori, offer a savory and smoky flavor that pairs wonderfully with their selection of sake or Japanese beers.

Goro Japanese Cuisine also stands out for its great value for money. Despite the high quality of the dishes, the prices remain reasonable, making it accessible for a casual meal or a special celebration.

In short, Goro Japanese Cuisine offers a genuine taste of Japan, from the attentive service to the exceptional food. Whether you’re a fan of traditional dishes or looking to try something new, this restaurant has something for everyone, and it’s sure to leave you coming...

The service was poor and almost dishonest, and the whole experience was very chaotic. We went for lunch on a weekday, and the restaurant had a selection of lunch sets and a lunch menu (which were the most affordable on the menu), but we were only told that all these options were not available (since there was no more salmon and chicken) AFTER we were seated in the restaurant and after we were already served our drinks. We were not the only group to experience this! The waitress also could not communicate this effectively, so we were very confused and had to flip through pages of the menu to constantly clarify which dishes were available but which were not. The waitress was also rather chaotic and made a big deal over a simple request to split the bill, which added to the entire stress and panic while eating there. (We would have been okay if she just told us that it was not possible - in the end we did not do it anyway, but she shouted it around and said many times that it would be very complicated etcetcetc and then went away for a long while in the middle of ordering, and then there was no information for another 3 minutes etcetc, you get the idea.) While we were there, there were people coming in wanting to eat at the restaurant, and the same waitress would say that there was no space even when there was clearly an empty table, and then switch to saying that the chef was tired, and the customers would ask if the restaurant was closed or not, and the waitress could not give a straight answer - it was just a huge amount of confusion on everyone's part and made eating there very unpleasant and stressful.

It's such a pity that we had a bad experience here, since the food was actually pretty decent and the prices were reasonable for good Japanese food. Maybe just...
