Will be 1 stars but given 1 extra for the staff’s prompt response to our request during dining.
Location is at level 2 of CHIJMES. Pretty easy to find, up the stairs or via lift. First impression of the restaurant is rather crowded with many expats/foreigners, so my take is due to many of them would like to try the crabs. We have to wait like 10 mins for them to prepare the seats as one of our friend secured via making a booking. Brought to a corner which has a weird smell, firstly I thought someone has smelly foot? Ok anyway I found out the place is pretty much like a “coffee shop”, they didn’t upkeep the place very well. Female toilet tap is spoilt and only one soap dispenser. Floor is quite slippery. Ambience is pretty noisy with a mixed of big groups tables of more than 5-10.
We ordered one crab dish, two vegetable dish, one Kuey tiao dish and few desserts. The crab came like less than 10mins? So I presume they have already prepared them way before just need to make the sauce of customer request. Overall the dishes are average taste nothing to wow about. Small size plate is really small quantity.
My other friend wasn’t pleased that they didn’t provide the crab utensils until we asked for it, also no lime water or something for cleaning hand, other tables have plastic glove (until we are done eating then we saw) anyway it’s nicer to eat with hand. Staff not attentive but response pretty fast if you can catch hold of them (as we are seated in a corner).
Dessert are good so remember to place order for them and try, taro and durian are my favourite.
Verdict: a place for the expats and foreigners, won’t be visiting anytime soon for now. We find the overall rating is on the lower for this restaurant. There are much better places to go for crab or...
Read moreThe restaurant was easy to locate as you step out of the elevator, but having to go pass the toilet before entering the dinning area? That was the first NO. The layout of the restaurant was odd in the sense that we were unable to see the entire restaurant from where we were seated (we were tucked in a corner near the toilet, and I blame it on the architecture), so that’s a second NO. The service was prompt and warm. The dishes were out in a snap. However, the ‘small’ sized dishes were literally that - small. So be prepared to order a lot more if you’re going for the ‘small’ servings. The quality of the food was average. You’d think that by charging $120 for 4 dishes (a small garlic crab, lemon chicken, fried kangkong and hor fun) the quality of the food would’ve blown you away, but no. It was average, and that’s the third NO. Spending $120 on 4 dishes that hardly filled the stomach, that’s a huge and fatal NO. For a restaurant in a location like CHIJMES, the presentation of the food was seriously below par. Imagine a tiny crab lost in a sea of garlic in a huge plate. That’s absolutely unacceptable unless you’re into garlic, lots of it. Last but not least, the valet parking at CHIJMES on a Sunday lunch service was horrendous. I’d suggest you park somewhere further and walk a bit, unless you intend to leave your vehicle with valets who had to struggle with the limited parking spaces, or simply arrive a few hours earlier than your booking time to get a parking space. Good services, average food, very small portions, hefty price tag, odd layouts and ridiculously limited parking. I’m not going back...
Read moreWonderful dining experience from reservation to dining. During reservation, I actually selected the wrong outlet but the staff helped me change venue without any fuss nor irritability in her voice. The staff here were all very welcoming and friendly. Excellent service! We were fortunate to have gotten a free upgrade to private room which usually needs a minimum spending of $800. The food tasted wonderful except the chef is a bit heavy on salt. Highly recommended is the Brinjal delight. This dish is slightly spicy but the crisp and taste of the brinjal is like no other. Those who usually don’t like brinjal may grow to like brinjal after tasting this dish 😝. Har Cheong Gai is not greasy, just too salty for me. The garlic baked live mud crab was sweet and juicy. If baked slightly longer, the garlic will taste even better. Plain Omelette is a favourite for children! The USA black Angus choice ribeye is wonderful. However, it would even be better if customers have a choice to the doneness of the beef. It’s a little too raw to look at but with the dips, it didn’t taste too bad. The beancurd in the claypot beancurd was a little too tough and the sauce too salty. I forgot to take pictures of the dessert. The Pulut Hitam comes with coconut ice-cream instead of the usual coconut milk. The house-made vanilla ice cream was simply wonderful. Mango Sago wasn’t very impressive but taste is acceptable. The ambience in the dining area is not bad too! Overall, I will still love to...
