Small Vietnamese restaurant in the Katong area of Singapore. Open till midnight, and offering a surprisingly large menu for such a small spot (indoor seating for maybe 10, plus outdoor seating for another 10 or so). Cash, credit card and e-wallet payments accepted. Service is perfunctory but satisfactory.
East Coast Road boasts an array of eateries spanning Eastern and Western tastes. This little spot does a good job of capturing traditional Vietnamese favorites in an authentic but adequately upscaled manner for Singaporean tastes (and budgets). Although the prices are reasonable by Singapore standards, the simple dishes that would cost a fraction of this in Vietnam are presented here in a way that doesn't make you count the pennies, and that's a good thing.
I went with their fresh spring roll offering and very much enjoyed it. Not just tasty but presented neatly, visually stimulating as well as pleasant to the taste buds. Rice paper wrapping was a little loose, so that when you bite into one of them, the remaining half + filling is inclined to try and slide out. Six identical pieces, each about 2-3 bites worth. Served with a sweet chili side that is well-paired and only just barely enough for all six pieces. Rice paper, lettuce, shrimp and a bit of pork provide good texture and the right bit of saltiness (from the pork) to help cut the sweetness of the chili sauce.
I opted for their pork belly banh mi and this was also delicious. Although the baguette was a bit chewier rather than crusty on the outside, it was also 11pm at night and keeping much of anything crispy in Singapore all day is a challenge. And it wasn't enough of an issue to detract from my enjoyment. My only complaint is that the meat was layered on top, so as you eat it sideways, you get a huge mouthful of meat on the top bite but mostly bread and a bit of veggies on the lower part of the sandwich. Sliced carrots and cucumbers for a bit of freshness (if they were pickled, it was hard to tell between the crispy saltiness of the pork and the liberal amounts of sriracha sauce I was using).
Menu also included pho, rice plates, and plenty of starters and smaller things to share with a group. I was tempted to take the waitress up on her suggestion of the fresh oysters on the half shell - maybe next time.
The meal was capped off by a caphe sua da - traditional Vietnamese French roast coffee mixed with sweetened condensed milk. Here they put it all in a cocktail shaker with ice and mix it for you, resulting in a more even consistency and flavor.
Looks like a mostly full bar along with beer and wine.
It's not mind-blowing food, but it's very good and reasonably priced as well as open late. Ambiance is very relaxed. Not a place you'll likely linger for hours talking but a great place to refuel as you explore Singapore or head...
Read moreUpon entering this most esteemed establishment, I was forthwith struck by the veritable cornucopia of epicurean delights that lay before me. The Steak, cooked to perfection with a tenderness that rivalled the gentle whispers of a summer breeze, was a true masterclass in gastronomic sophistication. And the Pho, that most quintessential of Vietnamese dishes, was a broth of surpassing richness and depth, replete with tender shreds of beef that seemed to melt in my very mouth.
But what truly set this dining experience apart from the common rabble was the unwavering commitment to authenticity that seemed to permeate every aspect of the meal. From the delicate nuances of the spices to the very atmosphere itself, which seemed to transport me to the bustling streets of Hanoi, I was convinced that I had stumbled upon a veritable gem.
And as if the heavens themselves had ordained it, the meal was brought to a close with a dessert of surpassing sweetness - a generous serving of ice cream, proffered gratis with a graciousness that bespoke the very highest levels of hospitality. In short, my repast at this esteemed eatery was a veritable tour de force, a culinary odyssey that shall remain etched in my memory for many a year to come. Five stars, by Jove! I daresay, I shall be returning...
