If you're a dim sum enthusiast or just someone looking to indulge in some delightful bites, the latest experience at Sum Dim Sum at HometeamNS Bedok promises an array of flavors that leaves an impression. I had the pleasure of sampling several standout dishes, and I must say, the culinary team has done an exceptional job.
Fresh Prawn Tiffany Blue XL Hargow: Starting with the "Fresh Prawn Tiffany Blue XL Hargow," the first thing that caught my eye was its vibrant presentation. The translucent skin, with a stunning blue hue, was smooth and delicately thin, showcasing the generous prawn filling within. The prawns were fresh and succulent, embodying the quintessential taste of dim sum. Each bite offered a delightful crunch paired with a soft, chewy wrapper, making it an irresistible treat.
XO Stir Fried Carrot Cake: Next up was the "XO Stir Fried Carrot Cake." This dish was a wonderful revelation. The carrot cake had just the right amount of crispiness on the outside while remaining soft and fluffy on the inside. The XO sauce infused it with a rich umami flavor, complemented by hints of spice and savory seafood. The addition of chives provided a fresh contrast, rounding out the dish beautifully. This might just become a new favorite.
Unagi Squid Ink Fried Rice: The "Unagi Squid Ink Fried Rice" was a highlight, not just for its striking appearance but also for its taste. The black rice, enhanced by the squid ink, was flavorful and slightly creamy, providing a perfect canvas for the tender pieces of unagi. The smoky sweetness of the eel and the umami depth from the ink created a harmonious blend that showcased the kitchen's creativity. It felt both indulgent and comforting—a substantial dish fit for a true foodie.
Wolfberry with Mushroom Siew Mai: The "Wolfberry with Mushroom Siew Mai" offered a unique twist on the traditional siew mai. The incorporation of wolfberry added a subtle sweetness and a chewy texture that contrasted nicely with the minced meat and mushrooms. Each dumpling was expertly crafted, ensuring a satisfying burst of flavor with every bite. It highlighted the restaurant's commitment to balancing textures and taste, and I found myself wanting more.
Signature Pandan Crispy Pork Bun: Finally, the "Signature Pandan Crispy Pork Bun" was the pièce de résistance. The green-hued bun, infused with pandan, was light and fluffy, lending a refreshing aromatic quality. The crispy pork filling within was savory and satisfying, providing a delightful contrast to the sweetness of the pandan. This dish was a reinterpretation of the classic pork bun that truly elevated the dining experience, making it memorable.
My visit to Sum Dim Sum at HometeamNS Bedok was nothing short of delightful. The combination of traditional and innovative dishes showcased the chefs' dedication to quality and authenticity. Have been here a few times now and it has become one of my favourite places in this area. There is a male manager who never fails to make guests feel welcomed, regardless of the amount spent.
After the first visit, I know what are the dishes I like so subsequent visits were much better. The ikan bills chilli is extremely delicious and addictive.
We had a large family gathering and they offered the room to us at no extra charge. It was a great experience and we will definitely continue to frequent this place.
Previous Review:
Saw the good reviews and decided to give them a try. But the whole family wasn’t too impressed. For a Tim Sum place, they surprisingly did better at dishes like hor fun and wanton mee. Everything was too salty. The xiao long bao was even more expensive than dtf but average in taste. The “signature crispy Pandan pork bun” was a flop. It was the most uncrispy version of this bun I’ve ever tried. The crust was soft and smelt like neighbourhood bakery bread. Custard bun did not have oozing fillings. Char siew bun tasted like factory type.
I do like the texture of their noodles - both Hor fun and Chee Cheong fun have a nice Q texture to the noodles. My family enjoyed the spare ribs. Wanton mee and Chee Cheong fun were value for money.
Quite a cozy place, though quite slow in service. Price includes GST so quite reasonable especially with Safra/HT discount. Will go back only for selected dishes, not the timsums mentioned above.
As others have mentioned, the reservation system is very odd… I didn’t reserve and I managed to walk-in to get a seat. Those who made reservations and came slightly later, had to join the queue like...
Read moreNot our first time trying Sum Dim Sum but this outlet’s food was the most disappointing out of all.
First of all, lots of items on the menu (including HK milk tea) were unavailable.
Then, we were served lukewarm xiaolongbao and only realised after a bite that the meat inside was still raw. We ordered two baskets and this was our first basket so the server took back just the second basket that was still untouched to ‘recook’ it. 10minutes later, she returned with only one basket and didn’t address the first uncooked basket - thought they could have at least offered to replace it or make a refund. This time, there was also a broken XLB inside and the soup was spilling onto the table through the basket.. Isn’t the soup the main point of eating XLB? How can anyone serve up broken XLB?! 😂
Other than the XLB, the fried yam pastry was overly sweet from the charsiew sauce inside, and the three treasures platter was literally 3-4 slices of meat each for over $20, all of which were so tough that even the sauces didn’t help elevate the flavours.
Out of everything we ordered, only the moonlight horfun was decent and had enough wokhei, but the rest of the dimsum didn’t leave much of an impression on us.
Even with 10% off for Safra members, the final bill was still pricey. I get that they can command higher prices because it’s more of a dimsum ‘restaurant’ but with food standards like this it certainly leaves much to be desired.
The high ratings are kinda...
