The White Tiffin is a Peranakan-themed restaurant that sells local favourites such as nasi lemak, mee siam, laksa, tauhu goreng and delectable dishes that, as they call it, are “rice stealers”. White Tiffin offers dishes such as curry chicken, babi pongteh and beef rendang that goes so well with rice that a small scoop of these dishes often accompanies a copious amount of rice.
What we liked about The White Tiffin is that its premise is unpretentious and inviting. The typical peranakan-printed tiles invites diners to its casual dining premise, reminiscent of yester-years. At the Woods Square restaurant, you can choose to dine al fresco (outdoors) or choose to enjoy the comforts of air-conditioning within. The concept is “free-seating” style and once we chose our seats, all we had to do was to head over to the counter to order and pay for our food this afternoon…
In this review of The White Tiffin, we decided to go with the Tiffin’s Sampler for 1 which included (from top anti-clockwise): – black vinegar pork – grandma’s curry chicken – signature beef rendang – babi pongteh – veg of the day (curry vegetables this time)
After trying out the Tiffin’s Sampler for 1, we can totally understand why these dishes are known as “rice stealers”. For starters, the black vinegar pork was so enticing and the pork itself was absolutely tender as well (perhaps except the top piece which was a little dry). This dish opened our palates to try out the spice-infused dishes of curry chicken and beef rendang. Slightly spicy but you could taste the effort in creating such tender meats and also the amount of time that must have been placed into putting together the rempah used to create these spice-packed flavours.
The other absolute rice-stealer was the babi pongteh where you can taste the fragrance from the soy bean sauce and if we were to hazard a guess, a sizeable amount of onions were also used to create that texture in the gravy. Yum! Lastly, we found that even the curry vegetables had different dimensions to it. Slightly spicy but completely fragrant and flavourful – not bland like most renditions out there. If we were to pick, the curry chicken (spicy), beef rendang (spicy) and babi pongteh (non-spicy) are definitely our favourites this time. The dishes were so good that we had an internal struggle whether to ask for additional rice – perhaps a feature that the White Tiffin should add so that diners would not be paiseh to ask for more rice?

Read moreI've been here many times! Even though the pricing could be on the higher side, it's definitely worth visiting!
Since there are many reviews about their nasi lemak and main courses, I shall write about their side dishes, drinks and cake that I've tried.
𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲-𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗹 ~ Nothing special. Taste like any other begedil. A little on the pricier side! But definitely a must if you're having their lontong or sayur lodeh!
𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗵𝘂 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴 ~ My favourite out of all the sides! If you don't feel like having a heavy meal, go for this! The cucumber and carrots are super crunchy giving the dish a very fresh taste. It compliments well with the fried tofu and peanut sauce!
𝗧𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻'𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗵 (𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹) ~ 2nd favourite side dish! I buy this whenever I don't feel like having too much food. The portion and flavor of the gravy is really good! Get a begedil along with it! You're welcome!
𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲-𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 (𝟮𝗽𝗰) ~ It can be a little salty by itself. It would be good to have it with rice, sayur lodeh or lontong.
𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗬𝘂𝘇𝘂 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗰𝗲𝗱 ~ My favourite drink here! Sometimes instead of going for a bubble tea, if I'm in woodlands, I'll get this drink to go! It's very refreshing and quenching! The portion is also big!
𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗸𝗲 ~ There are many cakes here but my favourite is this peanut cake. It's so light and yet so tasty! If you're a fan of peanuts, you should try this!
𝗚𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝘄𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗸 𝗖𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 ~ Definitely not for the faint of heart! It's thick(gau), sweet and bitter at the same time! The portion is bigger than what they serve at coffee shops. It was a little too much for me. But it compliments well with their old...
Read moreFood: ordered premium laksa with scallop gratin and seafood. Originally I was hyped to think how it would be like to taste laksa together with a scallop gratin. To my disappointment, it was just 2 large shell scallops, with no gratin in sight. Would suggest they remove the word gratin as it’s misleading. Next onto the taste, the laksa gravy was awesome, definitely top tier, as was their sweet chilli which I felt was the perfect blend for a laksa. However, the way the dish was executed was a failure. The noodles were overcooked to a point where it was mushy, my chopsticks were breaking them just by picking them up. Secondly, the scallops were well overcooked too. For a price point like this and in a restaurant like setting I would expect them to at least not serve me overcooked scallops. FYI the prawns weren’t even de-shelled and I had to pick them up from a gravy laden bowl. That being said I really loved the gravy but due to some significant oversights it’s just a 3/5 for me.
Service: practically no service, you walk up to order, sit down while they prepare your food, walk up to take your food again, and help them to return their tray. Seems fair I guess since they do not charge service charge. 3/5
Atmosphere: Was quite chill, felt relaxed but not perfect. 4/5
Will come back as I wanna try the other dishes they have when I’m in the area and I hope the execution of the dishes...
