Had dinner at Wooloomooloo to celebrate my husband's birthday on Saturday 19/03/2022. I have been here many times and I especially like their value-for-money set lunches. It is my go-to for meals when I want nice ambience and reliable food and service.
We had the iceberg lettuce with lump crab salad, a tomahawk steak, the baked potato and a few other sides. Every dish was done to perfection and I loved that the staff make suggestions so that we do not over order and waste. They plated the salad for us separately (there were 4 of us) and recommended we order more sides only after we were served and sure we needed more.
The staff checked to make sure that the food was done to our satisfaction so I was surprised to see another table of diners kick up a fuss over the doneness of their steak. And they complained after finishing 90% of their steak! . In my opinion, any diner that has any issue with their food should bring it up after 1 or 2 mouthfuls or even on sight, seeing as any burnt parts of a steak is immediately obvious to the eye. If you complain after eating 90% of it and demand a refund, that is very unfair to the establishment. After all, they did polish off 90% of an inedible steak!
My personal experience with establishments like Wooloomooloo is that they will ask about the food if a large portion is untouched. That gives diners a chance to bring up the issue for the restaurant to address if the customer was shy to bring it up initially.
To add insult to injury, I think these diners left some bad reviews too. I hope people reading these reviews check the number and type of reviews left by such reviewers. Some people are just impossible to please (all 1* reviews with so much bitterness) and some just decide to leave a bad review (having never ever reviewed any other place) because they could not get a free meal. That’s horrible and I’m finally leaving my review because I feel hard done by for the staff and want to set things right.
I am a steak lover and have been to all of the steakhouses we have in Singapore. Wooloomooloo might not be the most expensive steakhouse in Singapore but the quality of food and service (given the tight labour market) is up there, if not better, than the rest of them.
The F&B scene is just recovering from a scalding two years. Let’s be reasonable and not give them an unnecessary hard time.
Kudos to the Wooloomooloo crew for their patience with...

Starter – The Mediterranean (Burrata | Parma Ham | Roasted Tomato | Bell Peppers): This was a strong miss. The salad was over-seasoned, with salt overpowering several components on the plate. Even worse, the excess seasoning ruined what should’ve been the star of the dish—the creamy, delicate burrata. A poorly executed start. (Rating: 1/5)
Main – 220g Grass-Fed Australian Tenderloin (Watercress | Peppercorn Sauce): Thankfully, the tenderloin redeemed the meal somewhat. It was tender, juicy, and cooked well. The peppercorn sauce was served on the side, but honestly felt unnecessary—the steak stood well on its own. Solid execution here, no real complaints. (Rating: 4/5)
Sides – Mashed Potatoes & Creamy Spinach: The mashed potatoes were shockingly under-seasoned. For a steakhouse of this calibre, serving bland mash was a real letdown. (Rating: 0/5) The creamy spinach was passable—nothing to rave about, but at least it was seasoned decently. (Rating: 2.5/5)
Dessert – Bread and Butter Pudding: We were first served the wrong dessert, and only received the correct one after the staff realised the error. When the bread pudding finally arrived, it was warm—but the bread had an oddly stretchy texture. I couldn’t tell whether it was rushed out of the oven to make up for the earlier misstep, or if it was genuinely meant to be that way. Either way, it didn’t end the meal on a high note. (Rating: 2/5)
Service: Subpar and uninspired. The staff felt disengaged, and I honestly left wondering what the 10% service charge was for. Sure, it was a Monday night, but that’s no excuse for the lack of attentiveness or warmth.
We were also celebrating a birthday—but it felt like just another box on their checklist. I noticed several other tables celebrating too, and yet the approach was identical and impersonal: serve the cake, move on. That’s it. I’ve been to plenty of places where, despite a packed floor, the staff still managed to make special occasions feel special. Here, it felt cold...

Reached slightly early, about 20 mins before reservation/opening. Was turned away at the door. Okay, never mind. When we come back at 630pm and are led in, we see people already seated with drinks. A bit too fast in my opinion especially since they were being so strict about only letting us in. Never mind, I let it go.
Came to our table, I did indicate that it as for a birthday. Decoration was just some "Happy Birthday" confetti and a printed sign. It was quite sad, considering that this was such an established place. But again, I let it go. At least they tried.
The chairs were uncomfortably low for the table. It was at a super awkward height and not comfortable to eat at. You know the kind I'm sure. We were also sat next to a huge party that made so much noise when then came in and stayed that way. Their "private" room is truly not private at all.
Staff, not friendly. Another disappointment.
Another gripe was that throughout the whole meal, they had the weirdest mash of songs playing. I appreciate oldies, but the music they had was not at all conducive or appropriate.
Come time for the food, the thing we were most looking forward to. First thing to the table was bread and butter. Bread was great, but the butter had little to no taste. If it was house made, we felt it could have been better.
We ordered 2 steaks and a few sides. The food was pretty good even though the steak portions were kinda small for the cost. The accompanying sauces and different mustard options were good too.
Maybe the saving grace for service was the slice of cake they gave my husband. That was unexpected and nice of them.
Overall, the whole dining experience was just, okay. The ambience did not make us want to linger. In fact we wanted to just leave after finishing. Not sure if it was because we were not dressed to the nines which is why service was dismal. Could clearly see those in suits and fancy dresses were treated a lot nicer.
Food was good, but do not think we will be going back in the foreseeable future. It is a one and done...
