A few days ago my family and I went to Goudens and all I can say is that it's was abit chaotic. We walked in the restaurant, looked at the menues and waited at least 10-15 minutes to get the attention of the waiters to take our orders . Once we finally made our orded our food came to our tabel in less than 5 minutes which was great . I had a Mutton Bunny with carrot salad and it was delicious and extremely spice which I enjoyed . Once we finish eat this is when things started going wrong . I couldn't finish my food I was full so my family and I decided I should take it home . Once my family finished their food we waited for our waiter to give us the bill and give me a takeaway box . We asked that waiter LITERALLY nearly over 10 times to give us the bill and a takeaway box and all she said was I'm coming now . The manager was only worried about the people getting served so when we were calling the waiter the manager was telling her to go surve somelse. 30min later my food was cold and we were tired of sitting there . The waiter gave us the bill and the takeaway box and it was time to leave . It was truly chaotic the waiter and managers were running like headless chickens and was really disturbing . One thing I would like to say is that if they want to achieve better service there needs to be more saff .

Visited what has been heavily praised in the media and social media as the best place to have a traditional Bunny chow in Durban let alone South Africa. In a nutshell, you must be a le to handle strong spicy food, restaurant is truly basic, service is non existent, quality of the food is hit and miss. We ordered the lamb and chicken bunny, please also note that all these variations come in one sauce hence only the mixture changes. Also prices change regularly so what is posted here may change in a week or month. We had lunch, on a public holiday, it is very busy with locals. Prices are not cheap, for three people my bill with Gelato desserts was over R400. The quality of the lamb meat was poor in that it was tough, the chicken was chicken pieces simply cut up.I also ordered a lamb roti , the roti was nice the lamb curry was the same as what is served on the bunny. The bunny itself was very spicy, again that is a personal preference issue, lots of gravy , you can ask for extra gravy, most people eat with their fingers but you can ask for cutlery, no liquor is served but all soft drinks are served. Large portion, so even the quarter bunny is huge. Parking is off the street and quite safe. For me it is a once come and try it experience. Nothing special otherwise.

After hearing all about Goundens and that their Bunnies were the best in Durban I had to try it for myself! It was the first time I demolished a quarter bunny completely, I even stole the potatoes from my hubby’s bunny because that’s how lip smacking it was.The food was absolutely fresh, the curries were divine and the potatoes were UTD. The service from the ladies were so good, they were polite and friendly. We received our drinks 5 mins after ordering and the bunnies arrived in just 10mins. I wish I stayed closer to regularly enjoy this amazing curry house but I will use any opportunity to dine there whenever I’m in or around.

Gaudens enjoys a widespread reputation in South Africa for its authentic Bunny Chow, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts in Durban. Our expectations were high, anticipating a modern restaurant with professional service to complement the acclaimed cuisine. However, the reality presented a more rustic experience.

The establishment itself is dated, with visibly aged furniture and a less-than-ideal level of hygiene within the dining area. Despite these shortcomings, the quality of the food shone through. The Bunny Chow was exceptional, arguably the best we have ever tasted. Service was prompt and delivered by friendly, albeit unpretentious, staff. The atmosphere is more akin to a casual eatery than a fine dining establishment.

Portion sizes are generous, with even a half-portion of Bunny Chow proving challenging for one person to finish. Prices are reasonable, offering excellent value for money. It's clear that Gaudens primarily caters to the local community, which contributes to its authentic charm. However, with some investment in upgrading the facilities, the restaurant could significantly enhance its appeal to tourists.

Positive Aspects: Outstanding Bunny Chow, quick and friendly service, generous portions, reasonable prices.

Areas for Improvement: Dated facilities, hygiene standards, lack of sophisticated service, limited vegetarian options.

Recommendation: Gaudens is highly recommended for those seeking an authentic, local dining experience and the opportunity to savor truly exceptional Bunny Chow. It offers a genuine taste of Durban's culinary heritage. However, those seeking a fine dining experience should consider other options.

Note for Vegetarians: Vegetable biryani is only available on Mondays. On other days, the only vegetarian option is the vegetable Bunny Chow or vegitable curry with yellow rice. No other vegetarian dishes are offered.

We encourage visitors to embrace the Gaudens experience for its unique character and truly...

So i am from Pietermaritzburg. Went to durban for a doctor's appointment while at the doctor's appointment i was craving for mutton breyani. So i asked this very kind lady next to me. Where in Durban can i get a tasty mutton breyani. She told me try Goundens. Her husband took her there and the food was amazing. But make sure u place an order cause they get sold out and the crowd is alot. So same time i got on the phone n placed my order. When i got done with my doctors i went to the restaurant. Which was very easy to find:) the food smell made us so hungry i decided to add the chops chunty/fish curry/soji... As well ordered for my driver a fish n chips.

1st up the mutton breyani with dhal was so tasty. I was so so impressed with the breyani. It was absolutely so delicious! A plater wasn't enough😊 As for the fish curry n the chops chunty it was even more more tasty.

I like that the food wasn't hot it was mild but very tasty. Really really enjoyed the food here best restaurant for curries. I cant wait to eat from here again... Now everytime i go i Durban i know when to get home food if i m craving curries.

Service was excellent. Everything about his place is well worth it. Food came to 600 PLUS but its worth every cent!!!!!! Really really delicious.

Please you have to try if...
