We were visiting Robertson for the weekend and had made a reservation at the Four Cousins Restaurant for 8pm. As we were running late, and were fully aware that the kitchen closes at 9pm, my husband called ahead around 20h20 to let them know that we were still on our way, 10 minutes away actually. A VERY RUDE woman by the name of Jennifer answered the phone and went on to chastise my husband for being late, telling him that "so-and-so you are very late for your 7pm reservation, the staff need to go home, etc". I don't know where the confusion about 7pm vs 8pm came about, but nevertheless her attitude was totally unacceptable. She was on speaker, so I heard the entire headmistress-to-naughty-schoolchild conversation. Because we don't know the area well and were not sure if we'd be able to find another place to eat, we decided that we were going to the restaurant anyway. Her last words to us were "you guys better get here quickly". And when we got there the reception we got was very cold and unwelcoming. There were two women at the front desk and I don't know whether Jennifer was one of them. We rushed to our table and promptly placed our food orders together with the drinks order. Our lovely waitress, Sharon, was confused as to why we were rushing and seemed so uncomfortable. We told her about our telephonic encounter with Jennifer. She then went out of her way to make our experience pleasant. And the stars I'm giving are for her excellent service. She deserves 5 stars, but unfortunately our overall experience at the restaurant does not. The porkbelly I ordered was undercooked and very chewy. The mash it came with was so salty nothing could mask it. When I pointed this out to the manager (I wonder if it was the same rude Jennifer) she looked at me incredulously and asked "do you want another one?" Wow! Of course I didn't want another one, I was just bringing it to their attention.
I wonder if the managers at this restaurant generally look down on and talk down to people of a certain demographic. I would never recommend The Four Cousins Restaurant because we were treated like a huge...
Read moreA good kitchen let down by poor service and the staffs attitude.
Made a booking for a 60th birthday a week in advance, when we arrived there was no booking. No apology, just a snarky comment that we must have booked it at their other restaurant on the farm - we didn't as I'm aware some people do make this error.
We were told to sit at any open table as bookings are normally made in a quiter area of the restaurant. This would have been nice as my 93 year old grandmother joined us especially for the occasion from Clanwilliam.
We asked for assistance about 4 times, as it seemed like our waitress disappeared every now and then. This seemed to annoy her as she randomly brought our bill to pay, whilst still wanting to order coffee after our meals.
We also brought a cake, which we were told when making the booking we can as they don't do any thing special for birthdays. No one offered to bring us plates or assist, until we actually wanted to request the final bill - seemed like the cake just annoyed the staff.
Overall a special occasion ruined by bad attitudes and a lack of initiative to rectify an error on their side. Can't fault the food, everyone enjoyed it even through the sour taste left in your mouth by the...
Read moreWe were excited to try the food because the menu looked super delicious with a lot of options to choose from and it's Four Cousins Restaurant, so we had high expectations for the food. We were 4 people and we each had something different. 3 of us were disappointed as the food lacked flavour. I think it would be best to focus on a smaller menu and try and nail the flavour profiles better. All the ingredients are fresh, which is good. The Mexican wrap has no Mex flavours - it's missing some flavour elements to bring it together. The TAJ MAHAL pizza has a lot of potential, but the spur style onion rings on the pizza ruined the flavour as it lacked a sweet element - caramelised onions would do it! The steak was still purple instead of med rare. Our waiter was great and prompt, but we felt bad for him because it was mentioned that dinner time was not as busy these days and he would love more dinner customers... Apparently the breakfasts are good, but we didn't return again during our stay in Robertson. Restaurant seating is nice and the courtyard style is gorgeous. It has a very nice atmosphere. With a few tweaks to the menu, it can be...
