Donkey and I were on a counterclockwise bike adventure around the island, and after a long day of cycling from Soesokkak Estuary, we were looking for a good meal. We initially planned to head for a restaurant that served steaks and Western food since we'd been indulging in Korean cuisine for a few days. We were hoping for a change of pace. However, when we reached our chosen restaurant, we realized it was closed. We were surprised, since it was Tuesday.
We decided to search nearby for another restaurant, but it seemed like most places were closed. It wasn't very vibrant, and the open restaurants weren't particularly appealing to us. We weren't sure why so many places were closed, but it seemed like this part of Jeju was quieter than we expected.
We continued cycling towards our next destination, hoping to find something enticing along the way. We stumbled upon 광어다 (Gwang-eoda), and it was a welcome surprise.
Located on the second floor with a beautiful ocean view, this restaurant has a modern and airy ambiance. The exposed concrete walls are balanced out by warm wood tables and comfortable seating, creating a casual and inviting atmosphere perfect for a relaxing meal after a long ride.
The menu is primarily focused on olive flounder (광어 - gwang-eo), offering a wide range of dishes from traditional Korean preparations to more modern styles. We were spoiled for choice. Since we couldn't communicate in Korean, we showed the staff the pictures of the food in their restaurant on Google Maps, and they were incredibly helpful in recommending some of their specialties. Based on their recommendations, we ordered a variety of dishes, including:
광어 탕수어 (Gwang-eo Tangsu-eo): Olive flounder sweet and sour fish.
광어 미역국 (Gwang-eo Miyeok-guk): Olive flounder seaweed soup.
광어 물회 (소) (Gwang-eo Mul-hoe (So)): Raw olive flounder in cold broth (small). This is the spicy cold noodle dish with raw fish.
Donkey and I enjoyed the variety as there there was grilled, cooked, and raw flatfish.
Each dish was fresh and flavorful, and the side dishes were a wonderful addition, especially the kimchi. It was a true Korean feast. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, even though they didn't speak English. They did their best to communicate with us, and we could see that they were very sincere in extending their service. The restaurant also had a great queuing system and a cosy waiting area, which was a nice touch.
