일출봉횟집(Ilchulbong Seafood Restaurant) — Restaurant in Sokcho-si

Generous heart, limited options for solo diners.

숙소를 언덕 위에 잡고, 주위에 먹을 식당이 없어서 천천히 언덕을 내려갔더니 거기에 규모 있는 식당들이 몇 개 있었어. 하지만 알다시피 한국에 관광지에 있는 식당들은 혼자 온 손님들을 반기지 않아. 입구에서 거절당하는 게 싫어서 눈치를 보면서 이 식당 앞을 기웃거릴 때, 주방장 혹은 주인의 느낌을 풍기는 아저씨가 말을 걸어왔어. 혼자 여행 중인데 이 집 메뉴에 나 혼자 먹을 만한 게 있을지 조심스레 물었더니, 있다 없다 대답 대신 흔쾌히 “들어오세요, 하나 만들어 드릴게요”라고 말했어.

한국 관광지에서는 내 돈을 지불하고도 눈치 보면서 제대로 대접 못 받고 후다닥 밥 먹고 쫓겨나듯 나온 적이 몇 번 있어서, 이 아저씨의 대답을 듣고도 약간 불안했던 건 사실이야. 여긴 확실히 혼자 가서 편안히 먹을 수 있는 식당은 아니야. 메뉴에는 두 사람 이상부터 주문 가능한 옵션들이 있었고, 아저씨가 추천한 물회는 혼자 먹을 수 있는 양이긴 했지만 아마 백 불에서 이백 불 사이 음식 시킨 테이블에 무료로 나가는 음식 같기도 했어.

음식의 양은 적당했고 바닷가에서만 먹을 수 있는 특징 있는 음식이라는 것도 내 마음에 들었고, 맛도 평균 이상이었으니 대체로 음식에 관해선 만족하고 나온 것 같아. 1층에 아마 주방이 있는 듯하고 조리한 음식을 주로 손님 테이블이 있는 2층으로 올려주는 시스템 같았어.

가격에 대해 말하자면, 우리 동네 미국 캘리포니아에서 터무니없는 가격의 최악의 런치 스페셜(세금과 팁 포함)보다 싸게 지불했으니 불만 있을 수 없지.

나는 원래 리뷰를 잘 쓰진 않는데, 내가 이 리뷰를 남기기로 한 이유는 두 가지야. 첫 번째는, 식당에 별 이익을 주지 못할 것처럼 보이는 혼자 온 손님한테도 선뜻 한 그릇 먹여 보내고 싶은 마음이 들었다는 게 고마워서야. 그 고마운 마음을 남기고 싶었고, 두 번째는 내가 나올 때 주인 아저씨가 수줍게 한 말이 있었어. "난 옛날 사람이라 컴퓨터도 모르고 요즘 사람들은 다 인터넷으로 광고를 한다는데 어떻게 하는지 몰라요. 우리 집 맛이 어땠는지 간단하게라도 리뷰 하나 써주실 수 있나요" 집에 돌아가 잊지 않고 이 집에 대한 감흥을 몇 자 남겨야겠다 그때 생각했었어.

내 전체적인 총평은, 이 집은 두 사람 이상 갔을 때 훨씬 더 선택할 수 있는 음식의 폭이 넓어진다는 점이랑, 옆 테이블을 흘끗흘끗 보면서 판단한 바로는 사람들의 만족도도 나쁘지 않았고 음식도 꽤 근사하게 나왔다는 점이야. 두 사람이 즐길 수 있는 적당한 음식들은 미국 달러로 65불에서 120불 사이였어. 물론 세금과 팁 다 포함된 가격이지.

내가 근처의 더 많은 식당들을 경험해봤다면 이 식당이 유일한 추천 식당이 아닐 수도 있겠지만, 너가 나처럼 이 지역에 대해 아무것도 모르고 형편없는 음식을 고른 후 바가지를 쓸까 봐 걱정된다면, 이 식당이 불안을 줄이고 평균 이상의 품질의 음식을 먹을 수 있는 좋은 옵션 중 하나가 될 거라 생각해.

배고파 보이는 싱글 여행객한테 먼저 말을 걸고 흔쾌히 초대하는 식당 주인이 흔치 않거든. 그런 마음이라면 손님에게 음식을 잘 대접하고 싶은 사람 아닐까?

내 리뷰는 여기까지야.

I stumbled upon this restaurant while walking downhill from my lodging, which was up on a hill with no nearby food options. There were a few large restaurants in the area, but as many solo travelers in Korea know, touristy spots often aren't that welcoming to people eating alone.

As I was hesitating outside, a man who seemed to be the chef or owner noticed me. When I explained I was traveling alone and wasn’t sure if there was anything for just one person, he didn’t hesitate. He just smiled and said, “Come in, I’ll make something for you.”

That small gesture meant a lot. I’ve had several experiences at tourist restaurants in Korea where I felt rushed or unwanted as a solo diner — even though I was paying full price. But this place was different.

The dish he served me, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), was simple, fresh, and suited for one person. The quality was good, the portion was reasonable, and the taste exceeded my expectations. From what I could tell, meals here are normally designed for two or more people, so if you're in a group, you'll probably have more variety to choose from. Prices for two-person meals seemed to be around $65–$120 (USD), all-in.

The food came from a kitchen downstairs and was sent up to the second-floor dining area. The view was nice, and the atmosphere was quiet and clean — definitely better than some of the more chaotic spots in the area.

Another thing that stood out: before I left, the owner shyly mentioned that he wasn’t good with the internet, and said something like, “If you ever feel like it, a little review would mean a lot.” It wasn’t pushy — just a simple, human moment. That kind of old-school sincerity stayed with me.

Solo dining might be tricky in this area, but this restaurant reminded me that kindness can go a long way — even when the menu isn’t...

Great view! Great presentation! However food was just okay. Nothing memorable. Went on Monday for lunch and we were the only ones at the restaurant.

The crab was not tasty, nor fresh. Hwe also lacked variety. For $180 it was not that impressive. They should’ve also given us fresh rice, it was rice they cooked while ago. What a shame. It never happened in Korea. It seems like this place is a destination for tour buses. Came in since it was the nicest, cleanliness of all places I visited in vicinity. However, it was not the memorable, fresh seafood experience I had in Busan & Jeju. Let me know if you know a solid quality seafood...

Trying to find a reasonable fish restaurants in Sokcho seashore for some time, I think this place seems be the very one in the area. Not too much, not too little - tasty & delicious dishes, clean service and nice sea view as well. Well managed place, but sometimes understaffed problem with many guests.
