This is a difficult place to get to using normal roads via Frigliana, or a very difficult place to get to if you came in over the mountains on the dirt track like we did. Either way, when you finally get there, this restaurant, bar, the staff who run it, and the surrounding village are stunning beyond belief.
After a two-hour drive in a very inappropriate vehicle for the terrain we finally made it to Acebuchal, the "Lost Village". We carried on down to the car park at the end of the road and walked back up the hill to the bar which is one side of the road and the the outside seating areas which are on the other (I won't say left or right, it depends which way you approach them from but it should be self-explanatory when you get there!).
We had a table booked for three at 1330hrs and were taken to a table right on the edge of the restaurant balcony, overlooking some quaint cottages below and a steep ravine on the other side. Beautiful view. Had Chorizo and black pudding appetiser with their famous home-made bread and oil, then wild boar for main course. Absolutely delicious!
This place is worth the trek. It'll take the whole day to get there from Sedella like we did but take the easy route via Frigliana. The setting is lovely, the staff couldn't do more for you and their bread is to die for. Book in advance too, it's very popular as the upstairs seating area was already full when we arrived.
Prices are surprisingly moderate, portions are dangerously large and service quality is beyond doubt. Credit and debit cards accepted, despite the seriously remote location. Have the bread, seriously!!!
Full marks from me,...
Read more3food 5experience. Isn't it sublime driving through the countryside, towards a place you researched better than a new share listing? It's risky though..it may be a life highlight, or a.more memorable story of disaster. This is neither. It's a good experience though. The highlights include a rare and totally endearing Spanish IPA; a cheesecake that makes you forgive them for it being about as Spanish as the marscapone they used; a setting that has you basking like a lizard in the sunrise heat. The rest? They vary a bit but for the most part hit mediocre. Two exceptions. Croquettas are a wonderful potato based morsel of ill health. Here, for reasons best known to them, they are flour based, which only works if the velouté has been cooked thoroughly enough to convert the flour from glue to food. They didn't. The result is..well...glue. the goat dish is an attempt to respect Moorish culture and is a really tasty dish, with wonderful almonds. Sadly, the amount of goat meat in this main course is no more than 60g (that's maybe enough to form one maccas burger patty). It's a pity. No idea who got the meat that that beautiful beast gave it's life for, but it wasn't us! The service is sporadic, hectic but friendly (though the owner plugging his nearby shop, like a Big Issue seller, visited us twice lore than the wait staff). All in all, you'll enjoy the drive and experience. But perhaps...
Read moreThis place is fabulous! It's a true adventure to get here and an amazing experience eating here! Hidden among the hills behind Frigiliana, we included a stop here in our attempt to hike on the Puerta Verde route. Left the car about a mile away, when the road got really bumpy, but the walk down was really enjoyable. We are talking about an adult and 2 kids. But there were a lot of cars in the proximity of the restaurant, so you can get through lest it pours heavily.
The food is out of this world and the plating is also carefully done. The staff is very nice and welcoming, it's a true pleasure spending time on this terrace.
We had wild boar stew and venison stew, and pistachio cake for dessert.
The bread they give you is absolutely delicious, totally the homemade type. People from the area are driving all the way there to buy this bread for at home, it costs 3 euros.
This is not a cheap restaurant, but it's totally worth the trip and the expense. Each dish I mentioned was 17 euros, the dessert 7.5 euros, bread and olive oil 5 euros, soft drinks (larg size) 2.5 euros each and a large beer 3.5 euros.
We will definitely return, even with friends. Thank you for the extraordinary experience! I am only sorry I didn't pay more time to read about the place's story in the menu, I will surely do...
