My daughter and I have been on the road, traveling through Spain for 8 days. Part of this trip has been the sampling of culinary delights across the country as we find them. Most have been meals that were planned and sought out but this one, was not. It was in the middle of a day driving between Malaga and Alicante, Spain.
Dropping off the road, we just wanted to fill our bellies with something easy as we were emotionally hung over from having to leave Malaga, a town we both fell in love with.
Now part of this senior trip for my daughter was based on her wanting to explore the Spanish language as she has studied it through high school. We quickly learned that Spanish taught in American schools is but a hint and a whisper of that spoken in Spain.
Walking through the doors we engaged in the negotiation that so often marks language barriers and learned the meal today was a traditional two part lunch menu with a first serving and then the second. We had a very rough idea of what we would be getting but were not prepared for this meal to end up being the best meal of the trip for both of us!
My first dish was a pork broth of potatoes, corn and carrots, with boiled pork and chicken. Never in my 52 years have I thought Pork broth should be a thing but this very simple soup convinced me! Combining the simple yet small morsels of meat with the potatoes, and the flavors were out of this world.
I did know what my second meal was going to be and that was fried fish. Again I was blown away, but this time due to the freshness of the fish! Chunks of breaded cod, with sardines and octopus were treated to a simple batter and then fried just enough to create a perfect bite!
My daughter second meal was fried pork with potatoes. For a child who has never been attracted to pork’s distinctive flavor, I watched her eyes light up as she worked her way through the large portion. Asking if I could recreate the flavors was the highest praise one could want for this dish!
If you are wandering up the coast of Spain, make the 5 minute detour off the road to get lunch here! You will not be...
