Nestled next to a river in the small town of Lazkao, Zaleta Taberna is a cool spot to enjoy a Basque pintxo or ración and relax in a shady outdoor patio and listen to the locals as they speak Euskera, the Basque language. My wife and I came across this place by accident on a recent summer afternoon as we were driving through this picturesque valley about an hour away from Donostia. We arrived at the end of the lunch hour and our hostess said she would serve us what she had. It was all great—starting with a caña, or glass, of cold beer and green Guernika peppers sautéed in olive oil and salt, served with a basket of fresh bread!
