Mugarri — Restaurant in Markina-Xemein

I took my group of 16-18 year-old American students including teacher's here. It was at short notice as we just finished a stage of the Camino del Norte. We didn't have a reservation but my mind was put at ease as soon as I got to the bar and saw Belarri ( the ear in English haha !).

He took us to their rear outdoor terrace under historic archways where tables were already laid out and before we knew it the whole group was seated.

I was told by Belarri that the owner of the restaurant is a cow breeder so the steaks and burgers all come from his supply of cows at his farm ! They also process the meat to make the burger's on the premises. Having built up expectations we weren't to be disappointed, The Mugarri burger was real tasty as was the chips too. Service of course was superb. In fact Belarri also helped my group to get the bus afterwards to Bilbao. A true gentleman.

I noted on a Wednesday in June the establishment was pretty busy with a cross range of locals who appeared to be in good mood. It's also well decorated and nice and clean. It was a real pleasure to be eating here.

I think this was the best burger I have ever had in my life. Absolutely delicious. The fries were amazing also which was why we had 3 orders in one day. 🙄 And Bellari (bartender) was a joy! So kind and friendly. He helped us with our Spanish while we helped him with his English. As we were walking the Camino, and did not wish to stay up late, we very much appreciated the fact that this place was open and serving good food in the late afternoon / early evening. Lively place full of locals which is also probably the best stop in the city for Camino goers. They have some vegan and vegetarian options too which is amazing!
