It's amazing to me that a place like this can survive when they seem to go out of their way to treat people so badly. Arriving yesterday, after walking 25 kilometres in the pouring rain, we were totally ignored and told to wait for almost half an hour until check-in time at 2pm as we stood at the bar in our freezing wet clothes. It wasn't so much that we weren't checked in, but how rudely they spoke to us when we tried to communicate with the staff. They could have offered us a seat away from the cold doorway, or even just offered us a patient gesture of reassurance. Instead they looked at us like we were simply a nuissance.
Eventually checking us in to the albergue, after more than ten attempts to scan our passports, we were taken to our room, which by all accounts was fine. Hot showers and real sheets and towels. It's worth noting though that there's absolutely no heating here and the entire albergue was freezing cold. Our boots and rain gear had no hope of drying.
Returning to the restaurant a hour later for lunch, we should have known better and gone somewhere else. We would have if it wasn't for the rain. Again we were actively ignored for a further half an hour, so instead we sat ourselves at an available table so we weren't in anyone's way and patiently waited for a menu. About to give up and walk out, the waitress finally came over, although it was obvious that serving us was an inconvenience. Throughout our meal we had plates thrown down on our table, drinks forgotten, and the waitress rolled her eyes in our faces when my friend asked for a second beer.
Not only do they speak to customers poorly, but the staff speak to each other poorly, which appears to come from the manager behind the bar, ultimately translating through the entire restaurant. It's undoubtedly one of the most stressful, anxiety ridden restaurants I've ever watched in action. As someone who works in the hospitality industry myself, I can't even begin imagine what it must feel like to work there. My friend said it best when she commented that it felt an overwhelming and hostile environment. They're obviously understaffed and overstretched, which should never be the fault of the customer who only ever walks through the door looking to feel welcomed. If you can't manage that, then you're in the wrong business.
After walking so far, all pilgrims ever want is just to be treated with a reasonable amount of kindness, not as an inconvenience. We're out here doing hard things, and often in hard conditions. This place needs a kindness check. You should be ashamed of the way you treat...

I had checked into my room, walked another mile into town, say down to order and was told sorry, it's 4pm and the kitchen is now closed. Another couple who I had met hiking kindly explained in Spanish that I had been walking all day and really needed food. Okay, you can have toast with ham. Okay, I'm starving so I'll have toast with ham and a beer. Out comes three tiny pieces of sliced baguette with a slice of really oily ham on to top. I dab the oil off with several napkins and scarf it down in three bites. Then I go to pay. The lady at the counter gives me a nasty look like I just killed a family member. Turns out my slices of baguette with oily ham was 5.5€. And with the beer 8€. For 8€ I've had three course pilgrims meals WITH A WHOLE bottle of wine!!! Anyway, for a town that is a major stop for Camino pilgrims I'd expect a lot...
