Amparo Las Hayas — Restaurant in Valle Gran Rey

Warning. The place is dangerous for women travelling alone.

The young man-waiter is aggressive towards solo women.

Please be careful and avoid the place.

The event: After a simple miscommunication caused by a language barrier the waiter became verbally violent and If there weren't other guests, he would hurt me or my dog.

I look young and I am quite small, i travel with a litte well trained dog ( 3 kg). I always check first whether the dogs are allowed before coming to a restaurant.

The Amparo website says dogs are welcome. Just to be sure I checked upon entry to the restaurant. The waiter confirmed it is ok but I used translator app because he speaks only spanish. He seemed already agitated and very impatient with me from the start.

I went to the corner of verandah to be away from the main room. I also made sure other guests are ok with the dog being there by my side.

I used translator app to order and asked him whether its ok to use bowls for my dog.

The waiter I guess didnt understand properly and instead of clarifying said yes.

He brought my food and my drink. Before I started eating I gave food to my dog on a bowl. I believed it was ok for him to use.

The waiter immediately rushed screaming at me. It took another guest to explain in english why is he screaming. He didnt like the dog eating from the bowl.

I apologized and took dog's food away and returned the bowl to the waiter.

I apologized several more times but the waiter kept screaming and running in and out: he kept using spanish swear words and pointing at me.

The other guest explained the waiter wants me to immediately leave.

So as soon as i understood what he wants, I got up . I did not want to make any problems.

But the waiter kept screaming and following me. I was trying to leave through the main room . A female owner stopped me, I thought to apologize. But she started angrily talking at me in spanish.

I gathered she wants me to pay for everything. I said I will pay for the drink to appease her but I pointed out I wasnt allowed to eat the food. Nor they offered to pack it for me, so i could at least take it away.

The waiter and woman started laughing at me, and at that point I was crying and arguing with them via translator app. I was ready to call police.

Another guest rushed to save me. She helped me to leave. If there wasn't for her and her husband, I think they would hurt me and my dog, and police would have to be involved.

They thought I was alone, unprotected and vulnerable. And they took the opportunity.

After the incident I asked about them in the local community. And apparently the waiter has bad reputation, including drug use.

The other employees must be his family and they have nothing but disdain for foreigners, especially women...

Da wir La Gomera zu Fuß umrunden wollten, hatten wir einige Sorgfalt auf die Planung der Etappen und die frühzeitige Reservierung passender Quartiere verwendet. Als wir auf der Etappe nach Las Hayas nach sechs Stunden schweißtreibendem Aufstieg noch fünf Minuten von der ersehnten Dusche in den Casas Rurales Amparo entfernt waren, traf eine lapidare WhatsApp-Nachricht der Vermieterin ein, es gebe ein "last minute problem" mit unserer Reservierung. Sie habe in Arure Ersatz besorgt, das seien ja nur 10 Minuten. Kein Wort des Bedauerns oder der Entschuldigung. Offensichtlich hatte man für die Buchung einer größeren Radgruppe unsere beiden Zimmer benötigt, uns aber erst möglichst kurzfristig informiert, damit wir keine Chance zum Umdisponieren mehr hatten. Das Personal vor Ort im Restaurant Amparo war oder tat ahnungslos, man sei hier nur die Ausgabestelle der Schlüssel, ||die Zimmervermietung laufe über eine Agentur. Die Vermieter in Arure waren zwar superlieb und bemüht, die Ferienwohnung im Hinterhof des Restaurants El Jape war aber trotzdem das trostloseste Quartier, in dem wir je übernachtet haben. Man möge die Bilder mit denen auf der Homepage der Casas Amparo vergleichen. Die Behauptung unserer ursprünglichen Vermieterin in ihrer WhatsApp, das Ersatzquartier sei ein Upgrade, das sie uns netterweise ohne Zusatzkosten organisiert habe, macht mich deshalb auch nach zweimal Drüberschlafen noch sprachlos. Immerhin ein Taxi organisierte sie nach Aufforderung, damit wir mit zwei erschöpften Kindern nicht nochmal eineinhalb Stunden zu einem Ort zurücklaufen mussten, an dem wir gar nicht hatten übernachten wollen. Statt des geplanten Essens auf der Panoramaterrasse mit Meerblick des Restaurants Amparo also Abendessen in einem dusteren Hinterzimmer in Arure. Es kann ja mal was schief gehen, aber wenn ich mein Quartier überbuche, sollte ich mich wenigstens bemühen, den Leidtragenden eine angemessene Entschädigung zu bieten, und sie nicht noch für dumm verkaufen und was von ominösen "technical problems" fabulieren. Nicht mal die Getränke an der Bar gingen aufs Haus. Das eigentlich in Spanien vorgeschriebene Beschwerdebuch wurde nicht vorgelegt, obwohl wir es verlangten. Offensichtlich hat es hier jemand wegen seiner Monopolstellung nicht nötig, sich um zufriedene...

Fuimos por recomendación y tal vez llegamos con altas expectactivas, pero lo cierto es que nos defraudó bastante. El servicio empezó bien y rápido (el restaurante estaba vacío), así que los entrantes salieron enseguida y los pillamos con gusto. De principales pedimos carne de cabra (su especialidad) y carne frita de cochino, a lo que el camarero nos preguntó, literalmente, "¿la carne de cabra la quieren con papas fritas o arrugadas?" y formuló la misma pregunta con respecto a la carne de cochino. Entendimos, con toda la lógica del mundo, que venían incluidas en el precio, así que pedimos una de fritas y otra de arrugadas, pero no, no estaban incluidas en el precio de la carne. Ahora, analizando a fondo la carta (publico foto) veo que no venían incluidas justamente en los dos tipos de carne que pedimos, pero el camarero debió advertirlo porque en la carta, con una simple ojeada, no queda claro: hay que leer de cabo a rabo al menos tres tipos de información para sacar la conclusión de que no vienen incluidas. En realidad, la suma de los tres euros (un precio algo subido para un platito minúsculo para cuatro personas) por las papas que nos pusieron y del precio de cada uno de los platos de carne que pedimos, personalmente, no me parece caro, pero la sensación que queda es de engaño. No se entiende que tengan carnes con las papas incluidas y otras no. Para colmo, la carne de cabra y las papas arrugadas tardaron mucho en salir y nos llegaron frías, frías. La tardanza tampoco se entiende porque el restaurante estaba vacío, pero, ¿frío? Es como si se les hubiera pasado servirnos los platos. Lo mejor: las vistas desde la terraza y unos precios asequibles. De la comida no probamos nada que destacara especialmente, aunque la carne de cochino estaba limpia y sabrosa y las papas fritas perfectamente crujientes. La leche asada no...
