Fondue Castle – the name is so fitting because this restaurant truly reigns as the king of fondue spots (not to mention its location beneath the 12th-century castle in Hospental).
This place does one thing and does it exceptionally well: fondue. And to top it off, Sasha is an outstanding host.
We arrived early after walking from Andermatt and climbing Hospental Castle before sunset (a 50-minute trek along the river and over the snow—highly recommended if you love walking). Sasha welcomed us warmly and invited us to take a seat at the bar while they finished preparations. Waiting for us was a glass of delicious local apple cinnamon schnapps—on the house. My wife, who rarely drinks, couldn’t resist this golden elixir. Sasha’s warmth and engagement with every guest made the evening truly special.
As for the food — since the restaurant serves only fondue, it ensures every detail is perfect. I especially loved the champagne truffle fondue. A plate of freshly sliced truffles arrives alongside, ready to be stirred into the bubbling cauldron of cheese. The combination of fondue and truffle is sublime, and if you love this delicate, earthy flavor, I highly recommend it. And, of course, no fondue experience is complete without la croute (or la religieuse)—the crispy, golden cheese crust at the bottom of the pot.
We ended our meal with a Champagne and Mango sorbet. The waiter pours the champagne until you decide there’s enough surrounding your sorbet—a small touch that perfectly reflects the generous spirit of Sasha and his team.

We were slightly later than other diners, so pretty much had the place to ourselves, but it still had atmosphere.
Wine was a Sacha choice and was amazing, exactly what I'd described that we wanted.
Fondue was incredible, the bags of new potatoes were a lovely touch.
Sacha even gave us a wine bar recommendation in Andermatt and booked a taxi for us.
