My wife and I made a day-of decision to stay here on our way to Zurich after a driving trip through Switzerland, Italy, and Germany rather than stay near the airport. So glad we did! Our room was spacious, comfortable, and right across the street from the lake. Fantastic view of the lake from our window. Despite being a very old, historic hotel, the room was modern and nicely furnished. WIFI was solid. We were worried about the possibility of traffic noise but the host assured us it would be quiet with the windows closed. Indeed it was and we didn't have to sacrifice the view. Another reviewer complained about the pillows. My wife had the opposite reaction--when she first felt the pillows she said "ah, finally. a really good pillow." In the morning, the drive to the airport was no problem--about 45 minutes, and the first part was through rolling, beautiful countryside.||||The hotel is run by the chef and his wife and the food here is excellent. He uses locally sourced ingredients and fish from the lake. He's definitely talented. This dinner was actually some of the best food we had on our trip in terms of subtlety and craftsmanship. The chef was kind enough to come over and chat as we were finishing our dinner. Awesome guy (perfect English, of course). Oh... we sat outside. The lake view was stunning at sunset.||||Breakfast was included. Nice selection of standard fare. Good coffee.||||Great evening--it was a wonderful way to spend our last night in Europe, but it sure made heading home that...
Read moreWe have been visiting Switzerland for over 50 years. We have often stayed with my friend (classmate from graduate school) and his wife and occasionally stayed at hotels (Hotel Sonnenburg and the Dolder Grand). As our friends in Stafa have moved into a smaller place (condo) my wife and I stayed at the Gasthof. It was a delightful experience (Stafa is about a 30 minute ride from downtown Zurich). The room was spacious, with a great view of the lake and excellent shower and other facilities. Despite being on the main street it was quiet. The owners are a delightful couple and make you feel welcome and at home. The service is excellent and the family run place balances Swiss efficiency with personal attention impeccably. The food at the restaurant is excellent and the maitre de and other staff very attentive. Breakfasts are a delight and set the stage for the rest of the day. I dont know how the Swiss do it but if there were one place in the world where I would have liked to spend more time it would be Switzerland. And the Gasthof is a metaphor for all of...
Read moreGasthof zur Sonne is a nice looking historical building. So don't be surprised carrying your luggage up to 2nd or 3rd floor. My room 208 was ok, nothing great, but with all you need for a one night stop over. Staff was friendly and helpful. The Gasthof has no dedicated parking space but you can use the public parking opposite to the lake, but you've to pay and regular recharging of limited parking ticket might be a bit annoying especially during the day. Breakfast choices were limited but overall ok. The highlight was definitely to bar in the basement with an extremely friendly waitress making our group supper a special event with cold cuts and some nice wine...
