泰鍍泰式料理 Thai Do Thai Restaurant — Restaurant in Taichung

Warning: While the menu shows borderline high but still reasonable prices, you eventually end up paying much more than the menu price because this restaurant makes you pay an additional surprise "service fee" when you check out. When I ate here, this service fee was not mentioned on the menu. So this restaurant tricks you into paying much more than the menu price.

I think the higher prices one pays here is perhaps mostly for an expensive rent? The meal would be worth it if it were really reflected in the quality of the food.

While the 3-flavors fish salad I got tasted nice enough, the bed of lettuce they served it with was the regular grade supermarket lettuce that has the least flavor and least nutritional value. The fried fish pieces that it came with were only better than so-so. The clam soup was indeed delicious and the better of the two dishes. Many of the clams were still locked shut, which usually seems to indicate the clams might not be so fresh. The lemonade was tasty. The rice was, well it was white rice. It looked different, so maybe it was "Thai jasmine rise".

The printed bill showed that I was only supposed to pay $475 for the two dishes and lemonade, but when I went to the service counter they added a surprise "service fee". Thus the bill came to about $553. Why? For what "service"? While the waitress did seem attentive and kind enough, she only returned to take away my empty dishes in a rush, as I feel she was in a rush to gather dirty dishes early to get ready for closing the restaurant. That was the "special service" for which I paid a special service fee. Why can't they just include the service fee in the original price of the food price seen on the menu like other restaurants in Taiwan do?

Having a arbitrarily added service fee made me feel like I was in the southern mainland where there are shysters restaurants adding extra hidden fees everywhere.

While I was originally willing to come back to try a different dish - because the dishes I ordered tonight were a little on the bland-flavor side - I think I will not come back knowing that I will be charged a hidden service fee to have someone hurriedly take empty dishes away.
